Hi all,
Starting today my rear diff or drive train (Isuzu manufacured LSD, 1987)
started to make quite some noise (Clunking and cloinking kind) when
driving in 2WD mode in first or second gear while turning. No problems
going straight. When the noise appears the traction is gone for a short
while.
Anyone ...any clues ??? It feels like missing teeth on one of the
wheels.
But in this case it will also give problems driving straight, wouldn't
it ?
Any info appreciated,
Kind regards,
Erik-Jan.
b.t.w. Jacked the car, wheel bearings are tight so is suspension.
Everything looks solid. No oil leaks anywhere.

I'd first take a look at the u-joints in the driveshaft. I had to replace
mine on my 86 Trooper - your's are probably worn out. They make all kinds of
deceptive noises when they get ready to go. You need to actually take the
driveshaft OUT OF THE TRUCK to look and see them really well. Make sure all
of them are free and not bound up in any way.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Steve,
It seems the driveshaft is O.K.
When I jack the rear end. Shift in neutral and for instance turn the
right wheel the left wheel starts turning in the same direction. The
driveshaft also turns. If I spin the wheel a little faster the
drive-shafts stops turning now and then.
I wonder if it could also be a damaged axle ??? I think there is
something terribly wrong in the diff though....
Kind regards,
Erik-Jan.

Yes, I'm afraid so. Previously this was only the case when driving up
north ;-)
Leaves nothing much as opening it up and see.
Still driving though. Very carefull with disengaged clutch in the
corners.
If it all breaks down I can always shift to 4 Hi. No drive train wind-up
on tarmac anymore :-(
Kind regards,
Erik-Jan.

The rear diff has given up!
I've been driving about 200 miles in 4 Hi mode today on tarmac.
No problems occurred. It is only a front wheel drive now.
Gives me some more time to look for parts and still driving.
Kind regards,
Erik-Jan.
