I am looking at a 2002 S with 75000 on sale for $9900.00. I have had 2
Troopers a 86 and 89 which I still have . I know this is a lot of
miles for a 2002 but it has my interest. What can you guys tell about
this model ??> Any info will be great!!

This is not a lot of miles for Trooper. I bought my 98 Trooper in 2002 with
100K miles on it, and two years later it is still problem-free. Go for it!

Thanks for all your responses !!
75000 miles in two years seems like an awful lot of miles considering
I have a 2002 Mitis Montero Sport that only has 17000 miles on it. I
know the milage drops the $ by -$2300. according to Edmunds . I
already owned a 86 and still have a 89 so I know the vehicles are
solid. My concern is how the vehicle was maintained and if  Isuzu will
be around for parts in a couple of years. I will see if I can do a
test drive .

If possible, get a complete service history on the vehicle.  I've learned
from regular reading on many Trooper forums that there are certain things
that should have been done by this time -

1.  Spark plugs should have been changed before 50k (the book says 100k).
Otherwise, they tend to seize in the aluminum head, and you'll play hell
gettin' them out.  Replace only with the OEM Denso plugs.  Others seem prone
to CEL and misfire codes.  Use anti-seize on the plug threads to avoid
future problems.

2.  If the plug boots on the coil packs have never been pulled off, they may
well tear at this point and you will have to replace the CPs.  Apply
di-electric grease to the inside of the boots before reinstalling.

3.  EGR valve AND intake tube.  These should have been cleaned at least once
by now.  30k seems to be a safe service interval to avoid trouble, including
poor running, high oil consumption and the dreaded CEL.

4.  Transmission fluid should have been flushed and filled at 30k intervals.
If not, DO NOT power flush it at this point.  Just drain and fill two or
three times to avoid loosening sludge and varnish that will clog the system
and fry the tranny.

5.  And my personal favorite - disconnect the battery ground cable for a
couple of hours to clear the ECU memory.  Reconnect the cable, start the
engine and let it reach stable idle before driving.  I was amazed at how
much that improved performance and drivability for my '01 LS.

6.  Finally, check that timing belt!  If it's worn / cracked / hardened,
replace it AND the water pump.

Good luck,

Dave

Wow...bought our 2002 in April of 2003...doesn't quite have 9000 miles on it
yet...  :-)  I'm looking forward to seeing how many miles and years it will
last, I'm planning on wearing this one out (if that's possible!).  So long
as I can still get parts for it I suppose...

I have a 1992 LS (first year of the new body style) with 161k and
running strong with NO PROBLEMS!  Other than the speedometer dives
occasionally.

I also have a 2002 S with about 20k miles and NO PROBLEMS there
either!  But is also has the 10 yr/120k warranty which pretty much
ROCKS the world compared to others.

Too bad those f*ckers at Isuzu discontinued the Trooper!  I stay on
the lookout for recent models and will ultimately buy another trooper
once my 1992 dies (if that ever happens).

It is interesting that while the 92 and 02 are basically the same
body, I enjoy the 92 a little bit more.  The 02 is more plush, but
gets about 3 miles less MPG on fuel economy (3.5 DOHC vs. 3.2 DOHC)
and the older Trooper's interior seems a little more put together.  So
I have been looking for a 92-97 vintage Trooper.

Eric

Definitely interesting to note the differences in years.  We've got a 94 and
an 02...far as I know there's not much (if any) difference between 92 and
94.  The 02 definitely has more punch power-wise, which is helpful when
towing our 18' travel trailer.  I kinda like the 94 better in some ways
too...I think the seats are a bit more comfortable, and I kinda rather like
actually hearing the engine roaring out front.  The 02 has everything sound
insulated so well you can't half hear what the engine is doing (at least not
compared to the 94).  The other annoying thing is how quickly the 02
upshifts.  Fortunately you can hit power mode and it helps that a lot, but
then it downshifts almost too quickly.  :-)  Definitely nice for towing.

I haven't done a whole lot of trip travelling with either of them, so it's
hard to judge gas mileage, but they both seem to get close to 19 highway.
Drop the travel trailer on the back bumper and head down the highway and
you'll get 9-11 or so.  I think the 02 does a bit better in gas mileage for
towing...

Interior-wise, I do like the 02 better...the 94 has some of the buttons way
down low where you have trouble getting to them if you're not always driving
the trooper and using them.  My regular driver is a 92 Caravan and my wife
drives the 94, and we have the 02 for trips and such.  So on the rare
occasion I get in the 94 I have to dig for the cruise control buttons, etc.
:-)

As was noted about availability of parts, that's my only real concern with
the 02 since it's the last year of the Troopers.  I'll probably have one of
the last in the US (I was going to say world, but aren't they still
exporting Troopers/Jacaroos to Australia, etc?) to go out of warranty since
we bought it in April of 2003.  :-)  Maybe if nothing else, we'll be able to
get parts imported if they continue to be made elsewhere.  I guess we'll
see!  Just rolled it over 9000 this afternoon...
