the EMS main relay and the coil are both  supplied via
a connection on the IGNITION ON  relay...
Q. Where is the ignition on relay located..?
as i am only getting 6.to 7 volts at these points
i have to hot wire the car to get it to start and run.
my car manual has only partial elec. drawings
and suggests the relay MIGHT be some where
under the dash/ facia/ instrument  panel..
"good these books..are't they"..
have tried to register with... jag-lovers
looks like a brilliant site they no doubt
have the answers..but due to log on errors
am unable to gain access or e-mail them.
help would really be appreciated on both
matters..the car is A1 for the year and i don't
want to blow it up..

Peter,
  A couple of things
If you go to jag-lovers and click on "web-based forums" then go to the XJ-40
list, you can post right on the server to eliminate e-mail problems.

You can buy decent manuals from 2 sources:  JDHT  (Jaguar-Daimler Heritage
Trust)  http://www.jag-lovers.org/jagcds.php3?ql   These come in CD form and
run about $20 USD

The other source is the Haynes manual which is $17-$20 at any auto parts
store.  The Haynes shows the EMS relay on the 1994 XJ40 as being located on
the Right side of the car (on LHD cars) apparently under the hood near the
firewall. (It appears to be that location from the drawing)  It is a Black
relay located in a row of relays and is located the closest to the wing
(fender)

Hopes this helps.

Cheers

thanks webserve....
.no probs finding EMS relay.. it's the
"Ignition on relay" i can't find.. my haynes book
indicates it is somewhere ..inside the car
possibly behind the radio 'perish the thought'..
i would guess the ign'switch controls the coil of the relay
and the voltage is lost either across the relay contacts or before it
gets there..all fuses check out ok...i'll give it another day
before i start ripping out the interior check around a bit more..
thanks again for suggestions...

Peter,
The Ignition on relay is a light blue relay (with a black base?)
located, of all places, in the center console probably just before or under
the "ski slope"
I am not familiar with the '94, but on my '88, the console is a simple
matter of a few screws under the arm rest, pop the ash tray out and undo the
two plastic wing nuts on the bottom of the slope. Total time is about ten
minutes to have the whole thing off.

Cheers,

To webserve....
.found it ! ..in centre console as you said.
but in the '94 you have to remove the
radio also.
the relay base is clipped onto a  cadmium  plated
vertical  tie bar.a bit difficult to get out . but well worth the
effort...it must be an intrmittent fault as at first
it checked out 5 volt ..then after removal and re- fitting
it checked out 11.9 volt ..and the car started without
the hot wire...so will renew relay soonest..
have been on jag site you suggested for technical CD
will order monday for future reference...
MADE MY DAY!
CHEERS MATE!
very much appreciated
peter j.
