Have a 10 year old Jaguar Daimler XJ6 and the car will not start. Had this
checked by the RAC and was told the fuel pump needs to be changed. The fuel
pump is in the tank and the manual suggests that one first removes tank from
car. Is this really necessary?
Cannot really afford to pay huge sums for this and am not really sure
changing fuel pump will fix problem.
Any tips on how best to procced?

I'd like to be really sure it is the fuel pump at fault here - there
are a number of reasons why it wouldn't run - collision/impact detector
cutoff, ECU not detecting ignition pulses / engine rotation. If you can
wire up to the pump separately from the car wiring and it doesn't
supply fuel (undo a line) then its naffed.

I had this problem on my XJS 4.0ltr ... i found it was the fuel pump relay,
bad connections.

Jerry,
1. Check the fuel pump relay for continuity with a voltage meter. You
didn't mention what year your car is so I'm not sure exactly where
it's located, but usually in the engine compartment.
2. Check the emergency shut-off switch (under and above brake pedal).
This switch cuts off voltage to the fuel pump in case of excessive
delta-v (accident).
3. From the trunk, remove the spare tyre and trim panel, you should
see the fuel tank and wires going to the top of the tank. Connect a
voltage meter and have someone turn on the ignition while you watch
for a change in voltage. If you see the presence of a current for a
second or two, then drops to zero, the pump needs replacement.
The process for removing the tank is not too difficult. The hardest
part is disconnecing the two (feed and return) fuel lines from
underneath the car. They sit just above the diferential and are hard
to reach.
The fuel pump assembly is an updated part and it's not cheap. Most
dealers and independent shops charge from $1,500 to $2,000 for a fuel
replacement job.
You can get the parts online for about $700 and do it yourself.
