Programming remote

I have a 2003 X-type and the remote was destroyedin the washing
machine(but it's nice and clean). The dealer wants $300 to replace and
reprogram. I know they are available on ebay but can it be programmed
at home, and if so how?

Yes - isn't that a real rip-off? You can get a 10 function TV remote
anywhere for about $20 but Jaguar charges $275 for one that only
accomplishes 4 functions. I had to replace my XJ8 remotes, and
decided I could do with one - $550 for 2?   Give me a break!!!!!
I love my XJ8, but some things are a little too much to take.

Yes but you are happy if your TV remote operates your neighbours TV, but its
not the same if you can open his car !  Bought a remote for £25 and
programming for my XK8 is easy.  The XJ8 is the same, cheaper in the US.
X-type remotes are also available on e-bay and a little effort should net
you the programming instructions.

Check eBay.  I picked up the remote portion for $5.  Also, even though
no one seems to say this, you can use the older S Type remote (00-02).
I like this one better with a plain key as it still is smaller than the
huge X-type key with remote.  I gave the key to my Jag dealer the other
day when I left it for service and he was amazed it works.  Shows how
much they know at the dealership.

As to programming the remote, follow these directions:

To program a key fob insert the key and turn to position I. Turn the
key to position II and back to I (repeat four times) and you should
hear a confirmation tone. Turn the key all the way back and remove. Now
press any button on the key fobs to be added and you should hear a
confirmation tone. This has been tested and works on my vehicle.
