I have a 2003 S-Type R.  I've had a few things stop working over the last
year or so and am finding out the dealer often only has to "reboot" the
computer to fix it.  Is this something I can "try at home"?

I would be really interested in the replies to this because I once had the
misfortune to have a 2001 Renault Scenic which kept playing up. The problem
was solved by rebooting the computer by holding down a button whilst turning
the ignition key.

ps If anyone is thinking of getting a Scenic then read my review at

an ignition recycle, or rebooting the on board computers, will  solve any
number of problems at least for the time being.  To do this:
1)  turn A/C, radio, lights, etc. off and wait about 30 seconds.
2)  turn ignition on, but do not start, wait until all instrument panel
lights go off that normally go off and the chime stops.
3) turn ignition to start engine.
If you are lucky the electrical problem will be cleared and it works on some
problems you might not suspect to be electrical.  This does not solve any
underlying problem such as a check engine light or a severe malfunction but
it may get you back on the road until the dealer can properly address the
problem.  Unless the check engine light is flashing, the car is safe to
drive.  My experience is that of a Jaguar test driver.  I retired about two
years ago.

Thanks.  I'll try it.  The last thing to go out was the sunroof.  Wouldn't
open anymore.  Things usually happen on hot days.

I found out after a $150 "repair" that disconnecting the battery and
letting the car sit for a few minutes, then reconnecting will also reset
everything.

If you let the car sit too long with the battery disconnected, you will
lost your radio station presets, but the garage door opener doesn't seem to
lose its programming (it drifted once to the point where it only worked at
very close distances, but that seems unrelated to a battery disconnect).

That's a long lost post.  Thanks for the reply.  IIRC, when I programmed my
garage remote it was the garage that learned the frequency/code sequence of
the car so that makes sense that it would still work.  I'll keep the
disconnect in mind as summer approaches, that's when I had problems - on
very hot days.

I've had 3 different remote-controlled garage door openers and none of
them adapted to a 3rd party remote.  The process detailed in the Jaguar
Owner's manual has the car's remote duplicating the access code of a
standalone remote control, not the other way around.

My car does require programming, I believe it learns the frequency my garage
door opener uses.  However, I also have to program my garage door once the
car is programmed.  This may be to synchronize the code of the remote.
Eeach remote has its own sequence which the garage door opener must
recognize.

I have seen garage door remote control units which claim to alter their
code or frequency after each use so that tech-savvy trespassers cannot
duplicate the remote by sampling one use.  That would require a
synchronization of some sort.  Perhaps this is one of those.
