An XJ6 question. What is it?

I was looking at a friend's late model Series III XJ6 and behind the back
seat where the black box resides, there is a rather hefty looking device
that looks rather like a fan motor.  What is it?
Also there is a series of vents with flaps above the top edge of the boot
(trunk) opening.  Are these to let the air out when you close the doors or
boot?

Graham,

I cant help you on the hefty device; any pictures? And yes the flaps
are to allow air passage between compartments to aid in closing doors
and lids.

now then, bearing in mind I have a crap memory, isn't the drive for the
electric aerial in that area? possibly, maybe.

Thanks for your replies. I found out last night that it's the drive for the
sunroof.
