smoke from 1986 XJ-S v12

anyone have any ideas what would cause a lot of oil smoke to come up between
the engine and firewall as soon as the engine warmed up?

lube oil leak onto the exhaust manifold and / or pipe. Most likely
source is an old, hardened valve cover gasket.
