XJS Cutting Out

Hi All,

I have a 1991 5.3 Litre V12 XJS, and just lately it has started to 'cut out'
if it left ticking over in a traffic jam or if driven hard.  Its as though
it over heats and just dies.  After 5 minutes or so it starts again ok and
carries on.  Is there any sort of thermal cut-out switch fitted to the
engine please - if so, any idea where?  Any other ideas welcome also.

Cheers

PeterB

Generically, could be: heat related electrical component failure - like
a coil, or a fuel line that's too close to an exhaust manifold or pipe
causing the fuel to vaporize.

Others may have suggestions specific to this model.

I also have a 1991 XJ-S with the same problem after running it hard (full
throttle acceleration from 40 to 90 mph, for example).  Mine also sometimes
won't start after I turn it off.  In that situation too, if I wait 5 or 10
minutes, then it starts.  I've read that the crankshaft sensor might be one
source (and I suppose there are potentially a thousand) of the problem.  My
car is in the shop for diagnosis.

I'll let you know if my mechanic diagnoses the problem. If you learn what's
causing your problem, I'd love to know.
