How many RPM at 60 MPH ?

Double Tap - 04 Feb 2007 18:58 GMT
I have an 03 x-type 2.5 that I just picked up that now has less than 3550
miles on it. (Long story not worth telling). I have put about 300 miles on
it since last week almost all highway. I am very disappointed at the mileage
of less than 20 MPG. I am using Sonoco 93 but of course it has the 10%
ethanol crap mandated by the state in it. Yes I changed the oil to Shell
Synthetic and the tire pressures are at 33 psi.

I am thinking that the auto transmission is not shifting into 5th gear.

What should the RPM be if this car is in 5th at 60 Miles Per Hour?

Thanks

Sounds about right on the gas mileage... ours get about 18 mpg.....as
for the rpm... should be around 3000 at 60 miles an hour...

I don't own one, so I can't speak from experience, but 3000rpm
at 60mph sounds high to me. Calculating from the specs I found on
the internet which said the X-Type has a transmission final drive
ratio of 0.85, a differential ratio of 2.53, and uses tire size 205/65-16,
I came up with about 1744 rpm at 60mph... that's reasonably
consistent with an article I found on the S-type (yes, I realize
we are talking about an X-type here) that says the S-Type reads
1500rpm at 60mph (and gets about 18.8mpg on average).
But, perhaps I have a mistake or a wrong ratio in those calculations?

I would expect better than 18mpg on the highway
...see this page:  http://tinyurl.com/2x5rew (you can click on the years)
but, the two 2003 X-type owners reported very different mileage, and
other years only have one owner reporting.

I will have to do a run to see what mine is at when doing 60.....after I
typed that, I thought maybe it wasn't that much.....will get back to you on
this....

I just checked my RPM at 60 MPH and it is 2150 so the 3000 RPM is definitely
to high and the 1744 seems a bit on the low side. I think I will email
Jaguar and ask them what it should be. If I get an answer I will post it
here.

I agree... on mine it was just below the 2250 mark while going 60 mph.
My initial estimate of 3000 rpm was wrong (as usual).....

Hope this helps...

Not really, but still shakin head...you would at least think the person
would make an effort to find the answer for you.. I mean it isn't a hard
question...

Since Ms. Baezworks at the customer relationship center, my impression is
that her specific function is to terminate as many relationships with the
owners of Jaguar cars as possible in the shortest possible time.

Sounds like she is doing a wonderful job... think we should recommend
her for a promotion?

It's not hard math either.  Set up a spreadsheet and plug in the
numbers.  Here's the technical stuff you need:

Transfer case ratio:  2.527:1

Transmission:
Gear ratios:

First:             3.80:1
Second:        2.13:1
Third:            1.36:1
Fourth:          0.93:1
Fifth:             0.68:1
Reverse:        2.97:1

You'd need your tires' dynamic rolling radius to be precise, but a
simple measurement of the static radius ought to be close enough.

I have a "rpms at speeds in gears" spreadsheet somewhere but I can't
find it at the moment.  I also don't have an automatic or your tires,
so I'm not all that much interested in working up your numbers.

We figured the rpms would be right around 2150 at 60 mph....we were just
remarking how great a job the customer service rep was doing....

Another answer!

I was driving my nearly-a-Jaguar Jeep this morning when it hit me: HOW
COLD IS IT WHERE YOU ARE?

The reason I ask is, the Jeep's 5-speed overdrive autobox (the only
automatic in our household; the X-Type is a manual) has a routine that
limits shifts above third gear until the engine is slightly warmed
up.  The other day when it was well below 0ºF here, it took about 10
miles!  This morning, at about -1ºF, it took three.  It even works for
nearly a mile when it's in the 20s.  It varies, but it's there and
quite noticeable when it's very cold.  I don't know if the Jaguar 'box
has the same programming, but I do know it's not too uncommon with a
lot of manufacturers these days.  It might be mentioned in the owner's
manual (I would have skipped that part in reading it.).  It wouldn't
surprise me to see it operating anywhere in the northern half of the
US this week.

Why would I say my Jeep is nearly a Jaguar?  Well, let's look at the
coincidences:
1) Both have 5-speed automatic overdrive transmissions driving an AWD
system.
2) Both have 4-wheel disk brakes.
3) Both had base-model 16" tires in 2002.
4) Both have 6-cylinder engines.
5) Both are red.
Most eerily,
6) Both 'Jeep Grand Cherokee'  and 'Jaguar X-Type' begin and end with
*the same letters*!
