Engine Temperature Indication Warning

While driving back from a short journey on Saturday (3 miles max) a
warning appeared on the dash of my 2007 Jaguar XKR stating: "Engine
Temperature Indication Warning".  I pulled over, turned the engine off
and then back on hoping it would clear but it didn't.  It was still
showing when I switched on for the first time on Sunday, so I decided
it was best not to use the car.

Called the dealer Monday morning and they offered to stick it on the
diagnostic machine.  While driving over I stopped to get some cash as
I thought I might need it to get a taxi to work from the dealers.
Shortly after continuing my journey I noticed the warning had cleared!

I didn't bother going to the dealers and just made my way to work (I
didn't want to hang around at the dealers for an hour or so if there
was no need).

I called the dealers to let them know and asked if they could explain
what the warning meant as it wasn't shown in my handbook.  The
"receptionist" gave me some bull about not really knowing what the
cause was unless it was put on the diagnostic machine, which isn't
really what I was asking.  I only wanted to know what might cause this
particular warning message to be displayed.

As the warning appeared after short journeys when the engine wasn't
hot, it clearly wasn't an issue with the engine itself, but more
likely a sensor monitoring the engine, which in itself may be a
problem on a long journey as the engine could have overheated - I
guess.

Anyone have any idea what causes this warning to be displayed?

You bothered to check the water & oil levels?
Early model jags had a nasty habit of the temp gauge running high for a
short period prior to going back to normal. This was usually a sign that the
head gasket had failed
Of course in modern vehicles the garage knows nothing unless the diagnostics
tells them.
