My gas gage (and range indicater) is all over the place and not even
close to accurate (always less than what is in the tank).  Any
suggestions would be appreciated.  thanks dan

Sounds like the sender in the tank has gone, has a bad earth or
connection problem . Its basically a float attached to a variable
resistance. As you say, your range is out as well as the gauge this
eliminates gauge trouble and points to the signal voltage coming to
the dash ecu from the sender.

Get a multi-meter and check the voltage and change in resistance of
the sender (unplugged and removed from the tank!) it should be a
smooth change in resistance ( analog multi-meter best for this) If the
float is punctured it may have sunk in the tank.

I bet its something simple! Good luck.
