1990 xj6 4.0 Sovereign front wheel bearings

Anybody know offhand how much torque should be put on the wheel
bearing retaining nuts?

Woah there! There is NO torque (at least at the end of what follows).
There is a specific method of seating the bearing if it has been
removed and another for adjustment if not.

With the nut lock removed, tighten the nut only slightly (no more than
12 lbs/ft).
Rotate the hub in a forward directon whilst tightening the torque to
20lbs, (if you've changed them) This seats the bearings.
Now release the nut by 1/4 turn and then seat it by hand (NO
Spanners!)
Refit lock nut and pin. The end.

If there is movement in the bearing after all this (and you havent
removed them) they are worn out.

P.S. you should get a haynes manual!

Yes, I know, thanks.  Haven't got around to it yet - too busy working
on cars and babysitting my 2 year-old while the wife works.
