I have a 91 YJ w/ 4.0 5speed manual. During the recent snow I got stuck on a
hill. Just a normal hill plenty of other SUV's pass me. Took me a long time
to finally get it up the hill. I was upset to say the least.
Anyway when slipping the rear end would get sideways (as if in 2wd) and a
knocking sound would start that sounds like it's from the front end or maybe
directly underneath me. It sounds similar to not fully engaging the 4WD if
anyone has done that in their YJ.
Anyone have any ideas? Transfer case? Shift linkage? or what. Any input
would be appreciated....

Hubs not locking?? I had that problem with a Blazer that used vacuum to
actuate a cable that pulled in the hubs.

see here... http://www.jeeptech.com/axle/d30.html
and I quote "The YJ and the TJ don't use locking hubs. The YJ uses a
troublesome vacuum actuated axle disconnect system."
sounds like yours has given up the ghost.

in the extreme cold these past couple weeks, the
vacuum actuator on my yj wouldn't stay locked all
the time. it would jump in and out. gonna have to
get that fixed soon. the 4wd light on the dash is
linked to the front axle disconnect. so when the
light goes out, you're back in 2wd.

Yes, please let us know how it turns out. (feedback is always nice).
I think in the end you'll be happier with a manual disconnect anyway.

Hey, even better for the DIY type. I've just learned that very few
people (even on a Jeep forum) are really the DIY type. <sigh>.

How sad :( You would think being a Jeep owner of anything prior to the
inception of the TJ, you'd almost ~have~ to be a DIY type. Guess I was
wrong. Personally, I'll MacGyver almost anything as long as it's safe. I'm
big on DIY... obviously from the link...
I guess the shinier the paint, the less likely the odds are the owner is a
DIY type huh? Might explain why mine is all flat colors ;-)
