Wrangler.. stock bumper question

I've seen a lot of people with stock bumpers take off the plastic
corner pieces. Is there a reason for this or does it just look cool?

I believe that it is just a looks thing.  They do not do much bumpering
themselves.

I suppose it might be a "looks thing" for some people, but if you get
your Jeep out and wheel it very often (especially if you're crawlin'
rocks), there's a reasonable chance you'll tear up those plastic
corner pieces.
