Serpantine belt

I put a new serpentine belt on my 97 Cherokee and it is adjusted properly,
but when I turn on the air conditioner when the engine is cold, the belt
squeals for a while then goes away.  Is it possible my A/C compressor is
going bad?  It cools just fine.  I tried some wax on it and that didn't make
a bit of difference.

If the squeal started at roughly the same time as the new belt, the
two most likely causes would both involve revisiting the presumption
that the belt is adjusted properly.  Too loose is most common, not
sure if you could actually get one tight enough to harm the bearings
  in the A/C.

Slight misalignment may also cause squeal, but wouldn't expect that
to go away as would a slightly loose belt induced squeal.
