'92 Cherokee Routine Maintainence becomes Major Overhaul???

I'm the proud owner of a New (to me) 1992 Jeep Cherokee 2x4 4.0L
Laredo. I've been trying to get it cleaned up. The previous owner took
care of oil changes and that was about it. It now has 207,000 miles. I
was going through half a quart of power steering fluid a week until I
replaced the pressure hose.

It was leaking oil badly, It was coming from in between the oil pan
and flywheel cover so I figured it was a rear mail oil seal or the oil
pan gasket. I took it to a car wash to hose off the engine. There was
about a quarter of an inch of grease all over everything below. I got
the distributor cap wet and cracked it taking it off. After the
replacement I read some threads here and determined that it was not
the valve cover gasket.

This past weekend I replaced the rear main seal and oil pan gasket.
BTW, thanks to all post on all the previous treads here. They helped a
lot. I tore the exhaust to catalytic converter gasket taking it off so
I ended up replacing that too.

Now I'm looking to do some other long overdue maintainence. I doubt
the rear differential oil or transmission fluid has been touched in a
long time. The transmission fluid pan has red RTF that looks like
silly putty all over it, so I figure it's been changed before, thank
goodness.  What else am I overlooking? This is my first Jeep.

I still have a lot of grease on the bottom of my car. I've tried
cleaning it off with both solvent engine cleaner and the biodegradable
purple stuff, but it's still caked on. Any suggestions here?

It's about to get warm here so, I'm also going to have to get the A/C
working again. I just keep telling myself that some men would kill for
a wife that would let them buy an old Jeep and fix it up. (She just
got a new Saturn).

OH NO Its only a 2 wheel drive?!???!

I always use the degreser from Autozone or the Engine Brite brand and spray
it on everything, let it soak about a half hour then pressure wash it all
off (you will probally need to do this from underneath)

I have used heavy duty oven cleaner in the past to remove heavy duty
grease. And I have used dish soap and a stiff bristle brush with a
long handle for light grease. They really worked for me, but I'm not
sure if either is a good idea.

Simple Green is cheaper and handles all but the really hardened
grease/dirt layers more than maybe 1/4 inch thick.  Spray it on liberally,
left it soak 5-10 minutes, then hose it with a strong stream.
Non-flammable, won't kill grass and reasonably safe around pets (including
rug rats).  It will take the wax off the paint but it doesn't harm the
paint itself.
