Hey everyone, I am looking in to getting a newer jeep, as I have a '98.
Does the 1999 and newer model have a better cooling system?? I have talked
to some people and they say that there is a night and day difference
between the two cars, as Jeep only used 120 parts from previous model
year, and the rest new. Thanks!
I had a '96 5.2L and now a '99 4.7L. Can't say I had any operational
problems with the cooling system on either model. By "cooling
system", you mean engine cooling, right? If you mean the heating and
air conditioning, then the newer model is crap. If you buy one, make
sure the HVAC system has been rebuilt already. It's a $2000 problem
that they all have.
Yes, they're very different. I like the look of the '99 but,
honestly, I thought the '96 was a better car.

We have had to replace the relay for the electric cooling fan a number of
times and the fan itself once on our '99. As long as the fan is working
though, it has never had any over-heating issues.
The HVAC system always works as expected, not one issue with it except the
dash vents are poor at directing flow. 4.0l with 130,000 miles.
Cheers.

Do you have the standard or dual zone climate control system? From
what I've read, the failure rate of the dual zone blend door assembly
is 100% by ~75k miles. I bought mine at 80k miles and it was already
broken (got a good deal on it for that reason and then fixed it
myself). First it'll blow cold air only from one side, then
eventually both sides with no heat. Not much fun in the winter time.
Now the evaporator core is leaking so it all has to come apart again.
Yay.

Cooling as in engine cooling? What year/engine are you talking about?
Regarding the 4.7 in a '99: It works OK, but the radiator end caps are
plastic and it's pretty much useless trying to recore. Not sure about
1998 and prior having that same issue. If you have a engine-mounted
fan, keep your eye on the VC for it. Later model years got rid of it
for a reason.
Also DON'T use regular antifreeze if you have a car that came with
HOAT antifreeze. The 1999 MY uses green stuff, and DC transitioned
to HOAT in later model years.
Removing the radiator for the 4.7 is a major PITA.
