I bought a TJ that came with a Champion 8000lb winch with remote. I've heard that most Jeepers don't get anything less than 12000lb for a winch for safety reasons. Should I just sell this winch or is 8000lb a safe rating for getting myself unstuck? Now 9000 or 9500 is more common but 12,000 sounds like overkill for a jeep although some do use it. An 8000 pound winch is the minimum. You want a winch capacity that is at least double the weight of your Jeep, rounded up to the next available size. Most TJs use a 9000 pound winch, but 8000 is okay. I guess you guys need heard of a snatch blok with a double pulley to make a 6K wench a 12 k and a 8 K at 16K. But there are those that still think you need a 9 or 12K wench for a 3500 lb jeep. Then you have to power it and big wenchs can kill battery fast too. The smart buy is a high quality 6 or 8K model that is efficent on power and has a large motor with a very good duty cycle. ALso lets not forget that when you start pulling at around 6 to 8k and more line load if you use a snatch block with a doubler you line load with only be 3 to 4K on wench and while it will run a bit slower, it will run a lot cooler because wich motor does not have to work as hard and it greatly reducely the chance of a cable failure or burnt out wench motor in high usage. ----------------- TheSnoMan.com >>An 8000 pound winch is the minimum. A smart Jeeper will always go wheeling with at least two other Jeeps, and 3 is better. The reason is, one Jeep weighs within a few pounds of the other Jeeps, and two Jeeps might need to be tied together to create an anchor heavy enough to keep the winch stationary. (Keep in mind that a winch will merely draw the lighter load closer to the heavier load.) The extra Jeep could be used as an anchor for the snatch block ... <snip rest> Stick to stuff you know ...
