Jeff Strickland - 07 Aug 2007 20:44 GMT I have a PC that was running okay, but developed a problem where the mouse locks up -- stops moving -- and the entire rest of the computer freezes at the same time. In the grand scheme of chicken-and-egg, I don't know that the computer freezes and the mouse stops moving, or the mouse stops and the computer freezes. I only know that the computer has stopped because the mouse no longer responds.
I have to physically shut the computer off by holding the power switch.
After many hours of checking, I discovered that if I remove the wireless adaptor, the computer works properly for days on end. When I install the wireless adaptor, the computer will lock up within a few minutes.
I'm certain that I have a hardware problem, and I think I have a power supply issue on my hands. The wireless adaptor is a PCI bus device, and I'm thinking the bus power supply is teetering on the brink of collapse, and the adaptor pushes it over the edge.
The motherboard is based on Celeron architecture, I forget the clock speed but 900 MHz sticks in my head.
This machine worked for years without ever giving me a problem. I installed the wireless adaptor about two years ago and was a broadband bandit for more than a year before I broke down and bought fiber optic service for my internet access. In the past ten days, I bought a new Core-2 Intel something-or-other, and was going to sell the Celeron to my brother in law. While removing my files, the mouse started acting up, and I jumped through all kinds of hoops trying to get the machine to work, I finally bought another Core 2 something-or-other for my BIL.
I found that the Celeron machine now works flawlessly for days and days, but I did not realize the wireless adaptor was a key. I installed a new wireless adaptor -- different from the original one -- and the problems began again within minutes. Sometimes the machine will lock up on the Desktop while booting, other times it will boot okay but lock up a while later. In any case, it always locks up in less than about 20 minutes. The PC is completely stripped right now, it has a keyboard, mouse, and monitor only. No printer or any other peripheral, including CD drive or 3.5" floppy. From the view of the power supply, there is only a motherboard, mouse, keyboard, and monitor.
When the wireless adaptor is installed into any of the 3 PCI ports, the computer locks up.
Is this a power supply issue?

It sounds like an IRQ problem. The other PCI devices in your machine do not like the wireless adapter. Have you also added any other PCI cards, new OR replacements, to your box recently? Also check the wireless adapter manufacturer's site for updated drivers which may address the issue.
When the box locks up, can you get any reaction from the Windows key on your keyboard?
Kinda tough diagnosing remotely. That's all I can think of right now.
Jeff Strickland - 07 Aug 2007 21:14 GMT >> Is this a power supply issue? > [quoted text clipped - 3 lines] > Also check the wireless adapter > manufacturer's site for updated drivers which may address the issue. No, nothing new. Yes, I checked for updates. The original adaptor (NetGear) and the new one (D-Link) are both doing the same thing.
> When the box locks up, can you get any reaction from the Windows key on > your keyboard? No, no action from any of the keys.
The (before I started having troubles) was a USB based wireless mouse, powered by a PCI-based USB 2.0 adaptor. I removed that adaptor and reverted to a PS2 mouse. There was no change to the behavior until I removed the wireless adaptor (NetGear), at which point (or some point soon thereafter) the USB card was reinstalled and the machine worked okay until the D-link adaptor was installed. Today, all adaptors are removed, and the problem comes and goes with the wireless adaptor that allows connection to the wireless network at my house.

One other possibility, though remote: Try disabling the wired network connection before a lock-up. If it still does it, I'd guess your original theory looks better; a dying bus on the motherboard, most likely a heat-sensitive component.
New MBs are pretty cheap now if you don't want the lastest and greatest. Just re-use the rest and do a clean re-install of WinBlows.

I did a fresh install of WinDoze a few minutes before I went and bought another machine. I managed to get a successful activation of the key code right before it crapped the first time after installing the wireless adaptor.
I don't have a wired network on the machine, only a wireless one. I was hoping for a power supply problem ahead of a motherboard problem. I'll likely not fix the motherboard if that is the trouble, but a power supply is an easy fix, and cheap too ...
I was thinkning of a heat sensitive component too, but I was hoping it lived inside the power supply ...

You may not have a cable plugged in, but I'll wager you've got an active connection. Check it via the Control Panel's icon.
> I was thinkning of a heat sensitive component too, but I was hoping it > lived inside the power supply ... I doubt it. When they go, as a rule they go big. But at least your MBR has that code successfully entered. That'll do fine if it finds its way to another MB. Remember, even if the install is fresh, you'll need to do it again with another MB if you choose to go that way.

Sorry.
At this point, my money is on your original guess: A dying PCI bus, on the MB.

Most new MoBos and machines have a NIC already installed, and the connection is near the USB ports as a rule.
I never liked them either, and the first MoBo I bought that had one confirmed my suspicions...
Scott in Baltimore - 08 Aug 2007 00:53 GMT Have all your drivers ready. Power down the system and switch the positions of all the PCI cards. This will case a driver/IRQ shuffle and _might_ solve your problem.
witfal - 08 Aug 2007 01:07 GMT > Have all your drivers ready. Power down the system and switch the > positions of all > the PCI cards. This will case a driver/IRQ shuffle and _might_ solve > your problem. He tried the wireless card in all slots with the same results.
Jeff Strickland - 08 Aug 2007 01:16 GMT Swapped the PCI port for the wireless adaptor, no help. I've removed all PCI cards, and swapped the wireless adaptor into the empty slots one at a time. The problem persists.

I realize that my problem is sorta like, I pushed the car out of the garage and now it won't start, where pushing it and starting it are normally unrelated activities, but this computer worked okay until I turned it off one day and moved it to another table and started it up again, and now it doesn't run.

I wonder if the old drivers are still in the computer or do the new ones overwrite the old?
I'm not so sure it's hardware. If it were me I'd be looking at SW/driver before replacing an otherwise good running machine.
Aren't computers fun...GL

Jeff Strickland - 07 Aug 2007 23:32 GMT >> >> Yes. I'm confident the only wireless drivers I am dealing with now are for the D-Link adaptor. As an aside, the machine seems to not care about the USB 2.0 adaptor that also uses the PCI bus. Maybe my hints at a bad power supply are not accurate ...
Somebody suggested a interupt conflict, but there was no change in the interupts between the time the machine worked okay and when it began working poorly. No software or hardware had been installed or modified, all we did was unplug the machine and set it up on another table to pull our private files -- pictures, Word Documents, that sort of stuff -- off of it.
We've already replaced the machine, but I can find a new home for it if I can make it run. It works fine in a stand alone environment, but I really need it to be connected to the wireless network. I suppose I could drag it close to the router and plug in a CAT 5 cable, but that does not give me what I'm really looking for. And, that requires a NIC card and a CAT 5 cable.

Overzealous zookeeper Friedrich Riesfeldt (Paderborn, Germany) fed his constipated elephant Stefan 22 doses of animal laxative and more than a bushel of berries, figs and prunes before the plugged- up pachyderm finally let it fly, and suffocated the keeper under 200 pounds of poop! Investigators say ill-fated Friedrich, 46, was attempting to give the ailing elephant an olive oil enema when the relieved beast unloaded on him.
"The sheer force of the elephant's unexpected defecation knocked Mr. Riesfeldt to the ground where he struck his head on a rock and lay unconscious as the elephant continued to evacuate his bowels on top of him" said flabbergasted Paderborn police detective Erik Dern. With no one there to help him, he lay under all that dung for at least an hour before a watchman came along, and during that time he suffocated. It seems to be just one of those freak accidents that proves... "sh.t happens."

My machine here locks when I install an Attache 'thumb drive', unless I remove my Trackball and use an optical mouse.
My previous machine would lock up when the On-Board NIC was enabled. Damn thing never worked, so when I installed a 3Com card NIC it would freeze up unless the On-Board was disabled.

w_tom - 08 Aug 2007 02:49 GMT > Aren't computers fun...GL > [quoted text clipped - 8 lines] > interupts between the time the machine worked okay and when it began working > poorly. ... Using your reasoning, I could recommend maybe 300 other reasons - and still we have accomplished nothing. Put on blinders, spin three times, point a shotgun, and fire. That must have fixed the problem. We call that procedure 'shotgunning'. It only makes problems exponentially more complex. Reloading Windows on defective hardware - I cringe at the number of new problems added to the mix.
In you first post, you suggested a power supply. Ok. We use that as an example. You do nothing more until you have taken the power supply 'system' (more than just a power supply) from the unknown state to either a 'definitively good' or 'definitively bad' state. Notice the world is ternary - not binary.
Two minutes with a multimeter (and make not even one wire disconnect) will identify a suspect or confirm the entire 'system' as 'definitively good'. See "When your computer dies without warning....." starting 6 Feb 2007 in the newsgroup alt.windows-xp at: http://tinyurl.com/yvf9vh
In two minutes, numbers tell define the supply 'system' as 'definitively xxxx'. AND because you post those numbers, then must other useful information is provided.
A defective power supply can make anything and everything appear defective. If you do not first confirm that 'system' integrity, then nothing useful can be learned.
Having confirmed power supply system, now collect other useful information. Well you reloaded Windows. Therefore you may have destroyed system (event) logs that stored the details of your problem as it got worse. See what is still within those system logs. IOW stop trying to fix anything - and making the problem exponentially more complex. We don't fix anything until the suspect is first identified. IOW we do as they say in CSI - "follow the evidence". That means stop shotgunning.
Also what does Device Manager report?
Now what can cause Windows to crash or lock? Hardware list (including software drivers) is very short - memory, CPU, power supply system, video controller, sound card. Notice the many things that do not lock a system - mouse, keyboard, disk drive, CD-Rom, video monitor, etc
Responsible computer manufacturers provide diagnostics exactly for what you are going through. If your manufacturer is not responsible, then download the diagnostic for each hardware item from the component manufacturer or from third parties.
IOW do not even look at Windows. Execute hardware diagnostics without Windows. Windows will only exponentially complicate the problem. Once each diagnostics works in a 70 degree F room, then do then all again in another room of normal computer temperature - 100 degree F.
Heat is a diagnostic. All computers must work just fine in a 100 degree F room. Any computer that works in 70 degrees but not 100 degrees is 100% defective. Unfortunately, the naive cure symptoms with "More Fans". Any part that fails in 100 degrees is defective and is corrected. Heat is an excellent tool for making an intermittent temporarily into a hard error. If you don't have a 100 degree room, then heat components selectively with hair dryer as hot as it goes - and then execute that diagnostic.
Meanwhile, when computer was running, load Task Manager. Have that always on screen until computer locks. What do the various parameters say? For example, does one task consume near 100% computer time? Again, long before we fix things, first we identify the fault. It saves so much time as you have already learned.
Well that is so much to do for now. Report back - especially every number and exact text of every error message. Remember, your replies will only be as good as information you provide. For now, stop trying to fix anything. Until we have a suspect, fix nothing.

w_tom - 09 Aug 2007 02:55 GMT > There are Macs and two PCs in our home. > > All this makes me love Macs even more. Which is why Macs are upgrading to Intel hardware? Chances are the OP bought a clone computer. Such computers sell so much cheaper than your Mac by 'forgetting' to include many functions that are required by the Intel architecture.
Unfortunately, many who then build these clone computers have so little grasp as to 'shotgun'. For example, it must be an interrupt conflict. Or it must be a disk drive.
Meanwhile, responsible computer manufacturers include comprehensive hardware diagnostics with the machine. Apple that also uses the same Intel hardware also provides diagnostics. Then people who fix such machines need not shotgun - try this and replace that until something might be working.
I'm looking at so many responses to Jeff Strickland that are not based in knowledge of computers. Too many clone computer promoters have never even seen a comprehensive hardware diagnostic - don't even know how few hardware items can create Jeff's problem. So they shotgun.
Jeff - provided are simple and first steps that anyone with fundamental knowledge would recommend. As even with the Mac, first identify the problem before 'fixing' anything. Until you have numbers from the power supply 'system' (a same 'system' found in Macs), then you have no idea what is bad and is good.
witfal - 09 Aug 2007 05:45 GMT >> There are Macs and two PCs in our home. >> [quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > your Mac by 'forgetting' to include many functions that are required > by the Intel architecture. Are upgrading? That boat sailed a long time ago.
The fundamental problem isn't hardware. Sure you can buy PC junk, but if you have a reputable brand built with good components, the hardware isn't the problem.
It's just bad code.
w_tom - 11 Aug 2007 01:30 GMT > It's just bad code. The problem is hardware. Where code is involved, the code is now shared by PC and Macs.
If buying a clone computer, then important code is missing: comprehensive hardware diagnostics. Better computers come with free and comprehensive diagnostics that boot and execute without adding complexity of an Operating System - Windows, Linux, or OSX.

I'd wade through removing all the drivers and reinstalling them.
Also check the crash log. IIRC it's here. C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson

I'm having this same problem, due to power fluctuations in my area due to downed lines and the cleanup efforts. IF your power backup/surge protector goes off, there should be a log of when and why it shut down or reacted. Can't say where that log file is as I don't do Windoze.

Psychopaths have a narcissistic and grossly inflated view of their self-worth and importance, a truly astounding egocentricity and sense of entitlement, and see themselves as the center of the universe, as superior beings who are justified in living according to their own rules."It's not that I don't follow the law.""I follow my own laws. I never violate my own rules.""Looking out for number one."

L.W. (Bill) Hughes III - 07 Aug 2007 22:22 GMT I'm sure you've run Ad-aware for a malicious PIN harvester, that's usually the reason for the conflict: http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php I had to give up on a Problem like yours after I installed all the Windows XP Pro upgrades, Explorer 7, that required a new, longer password for my Linksys Router. By the time I figured that out, a hacker had lock in use the wireless from: 169.254.106.67 which jammed my Hughes.net and machine. So, I just turn it off with that button we have on the front, and used my network cable for that machine. If that's your problem just double click on the wireless icon in your tray, and there will be the strange numbers, that have noting to do with your connections. And if you don't just wussy away from the problem, you spend your time trying to find someone to blame it on.
Give up again, Cooyon. You don't belong anywhere, especially Earth.
