It's been a relatively peaceful NG until about a year ago when one of our regulars brought in his family of idjits. Use your filters to remove the offenders and it's actually pretty quiet in here. Might take some time to get them all.

Welcome to the group! There are some great people here and you can get excellent advice and info on your Jeep from this bunch, enjoy and just try to ignore the noise.

twaldron - 06 Sep 2007 14:10 GMT Congrats on the new-to-you 97 TJ...and welcome! The '97 was the first year of the TJ so there were a couple of minor bugs to be worked out by Jeep. I'm sure yours, by now, has had them all fixed, but this is a good place to hang out if they were not. Tell us about your Jeep...lifted? motor? transmission? mods?

I'm curious as to what the minor bugs are. I've just got it so I'd like to make sure I catch them and fix them.

As far as bugs, it's been 10 years so I'm a little fuzzy. I went from a '90 to a '99 so I didn't keep up with the 97 issues, but as I recall they were minor things. Fitment, cracking headers (which carried on for a few years), exhaust manifold heat shield was missing....I'm sure more 97'ers can chime in.

I want to get some touch up paint to paint them to match the rest of the JEEP. Regarding the fender flares: If you really want the flares to match, you need to track down the flares from a later model TJ. I don't know the year or option package breakdown, but Jeep fitted later TJs with painted flares -- made of more rigid material and without the texture. People remove them all the time for wider aftermarket flares -- so you can dig up a full set for cheap money.
For what it's worth -- I've had great results with small painted areas using a PreVal spray unit with automotive-quality paint & thinners. Quick, easy, minimal clean-up (or none if you choose), and those spray units are dirt cheap -- Home Depot even stocks them now.

It's a hard color to photograph. It's a bluish green. Some digital cameras make it blue and others make it green even if you play with the color temperature. Blue and green are close in wavelength.

Blue and green are close in wavelength. I think the OP should paint the fenders black. It would look good, and be much easier than trying to get them back to the original color, unless you strip off the dark green paint and figure out what color primer / base coat the factory used.
AND, if you want to do it right, you should remove the fenders to paint them, and at that point, you might as well look at some after market wide fenders for when you get bigger tires <BFG>.

Actually, after digging out my "The Jeep Book" from 1997 the following colors are listed:
* Lapis Blue * Flame Red * Black * Stone White * Citron Pearl * Bright Jade Satin Glow * Moss Green Pearl Coat * Magenta * Dark Blue Pearl Coat * Emerald Green Pearl Coat
Your picture looks more like moss green.
I've got a lot of the TJ dealer stuff for Jeeps and accessories for the first few years. The last is an accessory book for 2005. Is there a site I could scan these and upload them for all?

Nothing like a jeep to remove that extra weight from your wallet.

(just kidding fellas) You will LOVE your jeep once you get going with it. Everyone here is very nice and extremely helpful. I have learned ALOT here in the past 6-8 months that I have been writing in with my own questions. You will come across the occasional idiot, but just try to ignore him (her/it?). For the most part, everyone here is great.
Your rig looks really nice. As for the fender flares....I didn't catch whether or not you wanted to paint to match or go back to black, but try E-Bay. There is a TON of great used/new stuff on there to outfit your ride with. Prices are usually reasonable too if you can get it. Just type in 'jeep wrangler' followed by whatever it is you're looking for.
Just a suggestion (if I may)......it appears that your tires are stock tires. If they are, a set of All-Terrains or Mud-Terrains would look AWESOME on it! I personally prefer BFG Mud-Terrains, but there are a lot of other great tires out there. Here are some pics of my rig....

My tires are 31/10.5/15 BFG Mud-Terrains. I do not have a lift on my rig yet, but a 2" coil spacer lift is in the near future. With your existing 2" lift, I think 31/10.5/15 would look nice on your jeep. Plus that size will also fit on the stock rims. Mine did.
griffin - 07 Sep 2007 02:13 GMT Ya, i just upgraded my flares and have a stock set from a 99 Sport for sale. If interested, contact me.

[quoted text clipped - 19 lines] > > www.flickr.com/firebutie/photos/ Great suggestion on the BFG MT's or AT's. I'm running the MT's on my '84 CJ and the AT's on my wife's '94 Land Rover Defender 90. Both are great tires (I don't work for BFG, honest). Zelix, you mentioned you're thinking of a lift. If you want more info on sizing, go to:
http://www.jpmagazine.com/techarticles/wheels/154_0512_jeep_lift_tire_fitment_ch arts/index.html
It shows sizing for all Jeep models and lifts from stock height to like six inches. There are also some other tires that they reviewed too.
Don't listen to those other guys about emptying your pockets on this rig. As far as I know, I've only spent about $5500 on my Jeep...that's when I quit counting...
Welcome!
Pete

I just order JP Magazine last week. My JEEP has a small lift already I think. It seems more lifted than my buddies sarahara of the same year.
I have some serious projects I wanna do to the jeepy. I dont really want huge tires though. I wanna get some fog lights and a class 3 hitch to begin with.
