After the discussion here over the weekend about AX15s needing GL3 lube,
while I was at my Jeep dealer today I asked their normally sharp parts mgr
what they were using in the AX15s. He came back with a lube for the 3550.
Anybody know what this stuff is? I looked at a quart and didn;t see a "GL"
rating on it at all. (Might just be 30wt motor oil for all we could tell.)

3550 lube meets a different spec than GL3, specifically for the New Venture
Gear trannies. In the aftermarket it's Pennzoil "Syncromesh" manual
transmission fluid.

Thanks, Matt,

FWIW, my Jeep dealer uses the 3550 stuff in the AX15s and swears by it. I've
been using Redline MTL in mine for years and still get a third gear grind
from time to time, particularly when cold. I may try the
3550 stuff just for grins.

I'd guess because they can charge $10-15 per quart....

I was in contact with an engineer at NVG a while back looking for an
aftermarket version of the Mopar 3550 fluid, he gave me the spec and also
mentioned "5w30 motor oil will work except in severe applications..."

Hi Matt,

My AX-15 is also looking to kick the 3550 habit. Have you actually tried
 5w30 in yours?

No. The AX-15 isn't spec'd for the 3550 fluid, though it may work OK...
