    I hope they can make the "Multi-Displacement System" work. Cadillac
tried it for a couple of years in the late seventies, to no avail.

  I've had a chance to try the MDS on a Chrysler 300C and it is pretty
  much undetectable.  There is a change in the exhaust sound as it
  switches on and off, but no detectable lag when you press the loud
  pedal or a slight uphill triggers all 8 cylinders.

  Granted this was with a brand new car, dunno how gracefully it will
  age.  However the Cadillac version from the 80's was a true POS when
  it was brand new.

How can they do that? Are there counterweights or something to keep it
smooth with different #'s of cylinders?

Thanks,
Matt

    Not very well. I would imagine they would have to kill the lift to
the valves. Of course they can't do that it'll start sucking oil in
those dead cylinders

and i hope someone can make the rack ^ pinion work.  That has been tried for
about 100 years, and still no luck...

    I don't think you can beat rack and pinion in small to intermediate
cars. Or small cars with big engines like the Bimmer seven series with
V8 or V12 must use a drag link and idler.

    Small Bimmers do like the Mustang II:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7911088727&ca
tegory=33589&sspagename=WDVW

But, the ones about the size of a Ford, the Five series and about Use:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7911485192&ca
tegory=33589&sspagename=WDVW

And more than likely Recirculation balls like the American Saginaw have
used since the fifties.

Quit off-roading on Mars.  Rack & pinion is the standard here on Earth.

    Pack and pinion are for puny cars like your Lenux, that made to be
light for gas mileage, but they are not strong enough for off road
vehicles, or even larger passenger car.

The technology has advanced quite a bit since then.

    That's why if we want to go fast, or quick in the quarter mile we
choose a 1955 designed push rod engine.
