I have a problem only when I downshift from 4 to 1, 5 to 4 is fine. I
have to slow down to a crawl before the gear will engane, there is some
grinding. I heard it may be synchronizers, but it it was them wouln't I
have an issue shifting from 1 to 5?

DOn't shift from 4 to 1...downshift in order 4-3-2-1. Why would you shift
from 1 to 5?

I think you should shift directly to the gear marked R for racing.

Low on gear oil maybe?  It will sure act like that when low.

>>Sounds like synchronizers are the problem. Check your oil & clutch
adjustment first. End float on the crankshaft can also give a shift problem
like yours.

Why would you even attempt to shift into 1 at any speed above 0 (zero)? You
should be using 2nd if you are not going to bother coming to a full stop.
Shift from 4 to 2 or 5 to 2 if you are going to do a rolling stop.
