Well, today I did it.  I broke my Dana 35.  Holy smokes.  What a PITA!  I
think I somehow messed up the locker in the process (won't quite lock
anymore -- seems to be always ratcheting).  *sigh*

Anyhow, I'm not locking that 35 ever again -- I kept the spider gears and
will be putting them back in this week.  I'm going to lock the front and be
done with it until I can afford/find a good deal on an 8.8/D44/9".

Never would've thought that puny 2.5L could've done that.  And I wasn't
being too hard on the throttle.

I'll post links to the photos when I get them uploaded.  You'll love it --
involves two winches, a hi-lift, two bottle jacks, and a tire.  We were
going for the darwin award -- but are still alive.

What size tires are you running? What kind of locker? What were you
doing? I'm concerned because I've got a D35 on 33's.

I'm running 33's and a D35.  The locker was a lock-right from powertrax (or
so I think...).

Be careful if you're wheeling any rocks.  If I'd have been locked in the
front I'd have been ok.  But the rear was doing all of the work.  I was
turning and going up a ledge when it broke.  Ugly stuff.

wow... I'm running 33's on my D35 but I'm not locked up. Hope mine doesn't
break! How wide are your tires?

It's usually adding a locker that makes the difference most of the time.
33" tires without a locker CAN snap an axleshaft in a D35c but the
vast majority of such failures with 33" and smaller tires had a locker
in the equation.

I'm hoping that being open with 4.10's, on 33's, and running a 4cyl I should
be OK.

Avoid overdrive gear.  I don't think that it can handle this combination,
except maybe in a tail wind or a long descent.

I use 5th gear all the time.  Of course, now I have a broken axle, but I
don't think that's a coincidence.

Using 5th gear had nothing to do with the broken axle, it's the trans that
is the weak link at that point.  The axle is getting a break of the other
kind then.

Here's a pic showing me under it.  Note the snatch block above me, the tow
strap hooked to a winch on the driver's side, the high lift just to my left,
and the bottle jack on the axle to the right/front of me...

My Sony Digital Mavica's 3.5" floppy drive up and quit and Sony doesn't
seem to want to sell a replacement drive to me so no photos.  :-(

I have a couple on some film I need to get developed.

Okay boys,  I have limited off-road experience and none of the extreme of
what these videos and pictures have been showing.  My question, as a novice
and interested party is,  just how common is axle breakage?  Do you have to
"try" to break an axle or is it something I need to worry about?

Extremely rare, except for Daimler's choice to use a Dana 35c, even
the Japanese rice burners use an equivalent of the Dana 44's 8.5" ring
gear: http://www.billhughes.com/dana35c/

If you only do mild off-roading and not getting heavy in the rocks; if
you don't put on really big tires, >32"; if don't put in a locker...
then you don't need to worry very much.

But if your jeep didn't come with a D44 axle, then don't worry about
breakage anyway, because when it breaks you can just take that
opportunity to put in a Ford 8.8 (with disk brakes!) or a D44. ;)

Like all opinions, others may differ with this one.

Here is a direct quote (OR CLOSE) from JP magazine June 2005 issue page 48
on differential basics.
Q: Can a locker break my Jeep?
A: Mr.Reider walks us through it....the greatest torque that can be applied
to either wheel with an open diff would be 50% of total power sent to the
axle.  This is because the spider geas split the torque 50/50., and if one
wheel loses traction, then power is lost to the loose wheel and the wheel
with traction receives less than 50%.  When a locker is installed, no power
is lost to the loose wheel, it has to rotate at the same speed as the wheel
with traction, and up to 100% of the power can now be directed to the wheel
with traction.  That can be twice the power the jeep and its components
were originally designed for.  Meaning the axleshafts or u joints may not be
strong enough.  Upgrade accordingly.

>think I somehow messed up the locker in the process (won't quite lock
