Want to know exactly what has to be done for kia to honor a warranty. the
car has only 34,000 miles. the oil has been changed every 3,000 but not by
the dealer. She has nevr had it to the dealer for any service, but all
service is up to date even though the car sat for over a year.

First check to see if you have reached the end of your 3 year/36,000 mile
warranty.  While you have only 34,000 miles, if it's past the 3 years since
date of purchase you are out of luck.  I do not know if your transmission
shift cable is covered under the 5 year/100,000 mile drivetrain warranty or
not, but you will have to read the fine print on your warranty paperwork to
find out.  The least you need to do is take the car into the dealer and have
them inspect what you need to have done.  If you are still under the
warranty period and they refuse to handle it, then you at least have some
documentation that you got it in to their shop before the warranty expired
and that gives you something to start with if you have to make a complaint.

There is nothing specific you have to do or show to the dealer to make them
honor the warranty.  However, if they can somehow prove that you didn't do
the required maintenance then they might give you a fight.  Just saying you
didn't do the maintenance, however, is not a valid reason for them to not
honor the warranty - they would have to show something specific that proves
it, like the original factory oil filter still on the motor, or something of
that nature.  Since there is no required or recommended maintenance on the
transmission shift cable then there is no way for them to show that you
didn't do what you were supposed to do (since you weren't supposed to do
anything anyway).  The two Kia dealers we have dealt with over the past two
years have both been great as far as service goes.  They were both concerned
with us giving them excellent marks on their report cards from the
manufacturer that they both bent over backwards to help us with the few
problems we had.

Cheers - Jonathan
