I want a Landrover, but I know nothing about them

Hi,

I want to buy a Landrover, but I am not mechanically minded and I know
nothing about Landrovers.

I live not far away from a spares centre, so can get things for one.

If things in the engine really are simple, I might be able to do them ...
I'm not an idiot ... but I'm not a mechanic.

Anyway, knowing nothing, I have no idea of how much I would need to spend to
get a decent model?

I have to say that I prefer the look of the LWB to the SWB. And also, I
prefer the hard backed ones to the canvas backed  ones.

I'm looking for one that will be tax exempt.

What kind of budget are we talking about mate?

They are cheap as chips from after market places, apart from some funny stuff that is.

If you mean series or early 90/110 models, yes they are very simple. The diesels are slow & noisy btw.

Same here, the thing to bear in mind with Land Rovers is stuffs easy to fix, but it's all very heavy!!!

Again, depends on budget mate, you can get a very good S2 starting at around £1500 for a good ish one, up
to gawd knows what.

They are interchangeable, dont let that put you off if you see a very tidy softrop.

Ah, right, so you need a S2a prior to 1972 (I think it's 72) The S3 is miles more prolific, even if you
do want a tax expempt car.

That's pretty much where I started...

Plenty of online sellers, lots of the little bits are on the shelf at
Halfords or other factors.  Not to mention Richard, aka beamends, who
supplies most of the people here it seems!

It's just a big jigsaw.  A jigsaw that has spent today dropping rust
in my eyes, skinning my knuckles and banging my head.  If you like the
sound of that, go for it.  If you don't, buy one anyway, but spend a
bit more to get a really good one in the first place and let the local
garage look after it for you.

If you want something very nice, probably 2 grand, and always keep a
few quid to one side for repairs and the like.  If you want a good
runner, fit for a rolling restoration, a grand should be more than
enough.  Projects from £100 upwards!  The first option will probably
be the cheapest over 5 years!

Good move.  Although I wouldn't be surprised if tax exemption
disappears some time in the next government...

That S2 in Middlesex looks nice, shame about the feedback :(

The 88 diesel would have been my first choice of the four. The big
benefit for diesel is much simpler maintenance because you don't have an
ignition system to worry about. I suggestion is to get a LR shop manual
for the model[s] that you're interested in from the bookstore or borrow
from the library and read about the maintenance schedules and such prior
to leaping into this endevour. Otherwise, we might find you back here
trying to sell you Landie to one of us.

Eh? I don't agree there at all, you have an injector & timed pump system. If that goes wrong it's a lot
harder to sort than a simple HT system.

Well, that is the thing with cars really anyway! Sp what if he buys it & hates it? No big deal really.
Buy it if you like it, sell it if you dont.
