P38 water use!

Been monitoring the coolant use for a while now, it uses about a half inch worth of coolant (on the
reservoir) for every thousand miles or so. It never overheats. I had a look near the interior heater &
it's a bit damp & it does smell slightly coolant like. I'll have the plugs out tomorrow to see if any
look a bit clean! I'm hoping it's the heater o rings (I have Andy C's easy repair) & not the dreaded.
Mind you, Badger tells me if it is the liners they can be permanently fixed with top hat liners. At £800
or so quid, it's cheaper than a new engine. Mind, it's £800 I aint got if it is that. I was gonna buy an
old ex-army for proper off roading. Might be on hold if it is!!

There's a possibility the wet in the car is caused by the bozos at Autoglass as they shagged my new
windscreen & it leaks, but not there!!

Any ideas on either would be good?

It's a 96 4.6 HSE.

If it's O rings you'll get a nice wet patch up the left side of the driver's
footwell- plus the telltale smell of coolant.
Thing is, the O rings leak when the system is being over-pressurised- a
sympton of the dread Loose Liner problem.
Start saving for those Top Hats! (Interesting, that- I hadn't heard of them
'til now)

Aye, Badger told me about 'em & i did see 'em in a mag. Just about my luck really, the car has done
150,000 miles & it happens when I own it!!

Well, if it is the liners at least they can be sorted permanantly without a new engine!

I'll whip the plugs out for a gander later.

Nige, dunno if you picked me up wrong matey. To replace the liners is a full
engine strip-down job and either send the block away for the top-hat
linering process or exchange it for one that's already been done. Whatever
way, you'll put in new rings, shells and probably a cam and followers at the
same time, effectively ending up with a new engine.

FS: Range Rover 4.6 HSE, drives like new, many new parts................

LOL

I'm hoping it might not be that, i reckon it's the heater draining down. Oh well, whatever it may be it
will be sorted one way or the other.

How much then for the whole shebang?? At 156k it's done well anyway & i paid the right price for it.
Might as well not bother getting the front crankshaft oilseal done then!! A piss in the ocean rings to my
mind!!

I did think it seemed a bit cheap. There must be some milling involved to seat the feckers for a start!!

There may be trouble ahead.........

They sell them in the visitor centre at John O' Groats, circular ones at
that, the original "round tuit's"!
Check also very carefully the hoses going to the heater stub pipes in the
engine bay, above the rear of the right-hand rocker cover, and the 2 small
pipes connecting to the throttle body. The plate they attach to is held by 3
timy (5.5mm) bolts that have been known to work loose.
