I want to know if anyone has experience any thing like this. The engine
was running great at about 65 mph the check engine light started
flashing.  Had it checked out at a repair shop, the engine is said to
have low compression in one cylinder very low at 15psi the others are
at about 175-215psi. is there a need for an engine replacement, or
could this be a blown head gasket? this is a 1997 2.0L non-turbo
engine. Engine does not smoke just idles rough, and runs hard but can
be moved.

If no oil or water are being burnt/used its more likely to be a burnt
out exhaust valve.

Sort it quickly, its going to be a 'head off' job, but a replacement
valve is a lot cheaper than a replacement head.
