Anyone know anything about the Lucas EPIC system?

specifically, should it have restricted power when the engine's cold...

this morning, it wouldn't pull above about 3000 rpm. after a bit it went
back to normal.

It did also not pull as expected when up to temperature, once. Wonder if
the throttle pot is iffy? If it's not getting a "full throttle" signal at
full throttle, then it won't go...

and by the by, if I fit an intercooler to one not thus equipped, does it
have to be remapped?

Dunno about the PRINCE OF UNEXPECTED DARKNESS systems Austin on the Mercs if
you try to open the throttle too early during the diagnostic cycle the
system restricts the revs until you return to idle and it completes its run.

Hmmm. possible I suppose. The check engine light goes out reasonably
quickly after starting though - I'd have thought that would cover the
diagnostic bit.

My transit didn't, not noticeably anyway.

The throttle pot is actually 2 pots, working in opposition to each other, as
you press the throttle, one increases resistance, while the other decreases.
If it is faulty then you should get a engine management light showing, as it
would detect the fact that the pots did not agree to the position.

Check the obvious stuff first, filters etc.(if you haven't already)

Possibly!
The pump will detect the cooler air, so calculate the higher mass so add
more fuel, but it may run out of range of its preset parameters before you
get the full benefit of the cooler.

Good point - no light, so unlikley to be a faulty component. I'll see what
happens this morning.

air filter done yesterday afternoon, diesel filter to be looked at shortly.
But it's not obviously short of power in general.

yeah. The intercooled ones have a "charge temperature sensor" instead of an
"inlet air temperature sensor" (or so sayeth the HBOL), the latter is on the
airbox on this one. Dunno if it plugs into the same wire. The intercooled
ones have the sensor after the cooler, which makes sense.

behaved perfectly normally this am. must have had a strop on for some
reason.

I daresay it'd not hurt to chuck a can or two of injector cleaner through
it, although the modern clean diesel doesn't seem to cack things up as much
as the old stuff did.
