Just read that NERC is now law, so overnight all RUPPs become off
limits to greenlaners.  Great, what a fine country we live in.
Government lets dangerous, foreign criminals go yet us law abiding
types can't go green laning on RUPPs.  What a bunch of arse.

What gets me is that the RA thinks pedal cycles are less damaging!  In
my days as a serious walker, it was the bloody mountain bikers who
messed up most rights of way!

I wonder what happens when a farmer drives to his fields now?
Surely they would be breaking the law?

I wonder if they will be prosecuted. Not. One law for some......

Well, I didn't f.cking vote for a bunch of neo-communist idiots. Just
another piece of legislation I intend to ignore. Let them close all
the byways, then I shall just be able to drive exactly where I like,
as driving across farmer Giles' field will be no more illegal than
driving down a right of way.

> Well, I didn't f.cking vote for a bunch of neo-communist idiots.

Unfortunately it's the price of being unpopular, never mind what the
impact of off-roading is compared to other abuses of the countryside,
more legislation by headline.  Like when Charles Clark got caught
regarding the non-deportation of criminals who'd served their
sentences, his reaction was to announce legislation to try and save
his career.  Sickening.

> Just another piece of legislation I intend to ignore.

I have no idea what the penalties of breaking this law is, none of the
press releases I've seen have mentioned it, so I suspect it's paltry
but certainly worth checking before making your decision.  However it
does mean that land-owners can now block ex-RUPPs to vehicles without
risking prosecution or complaint to the council.

Mind you with 50-vehicle convoys barging their way through the Brecon
Beacons, it's not that surprising, it only takes a few idiots to ruin
it for the rest of us.  Unfortunately breaking the law is going to
make matters worse so do bear that in mind.

So I wonder how many of the people who already break the law and go
decidedly off-piste will heed the new no-RUPP law...

If they outlaw vehicles on byways as well, how is breaking the law
going to make it worse?

Blimey, talk about jumping ahead!

They're not outlawing vehicles on byways, but people ignoring the law
and capering about on land they don't have access to, or people
abusing land they do have access to, is a surefire way to get us there
ASAP.

Because there's still quite a few unsurfaced roads, as in roads
not BOATS, that are open to us.

The current penalty for "driving other than on a highway" or
whatever it's called is a £2000 fine - and needless to say, as
happened to some of our club members [1], the Police will manage
to tear themselves away from trivial matters like burglary and
assault to deal with this terrible crime (sorry Lee et. al.
but I realy do feel it's about time the Police truned round
and told the Government to bloody well enforce such pathetic
legislation themseleves if they are stupid enough to pass it)
when some clown with no life and silly boots (how come people
born and bred in the countryside don't need boots?) rings
them up. [2]

It's a nice easy conviction, with no real evidence collection
required, so the Mr. Mullets of this world can use the figures
to look good - natuarlly the ill-will toward the law generated
will not be recorded.

Richard

[1] Police attended within 10 mins, on a Sunday, in the
middle of nowhere.

[2] still seething that a Mr. Fitzmorris didn't even get
interviewed when he nearly killed me pulling out in front
of me on my motorbike - but then I wasn't pals with the Chief
Constable or a golf club member so I didn't count.

Time to break out the horse and cart and show them what real damage is.
maybe run over a few ramblers on the way just for good luck.

If you've got the horse then can't you be a bit more inventive than just
pulling a cart?  How about a cart which is in fact a Series Land Rover with
the engine and transmission removed?  Or if you're feeling particularly
beligerent then a cart which very closely resembles a plough ;-)

I can't wait to see how 'they' are going to police it.............

Looks like it time to hit the council offices next week to find the
definitive map and see exactly where i can/cannot drive.  Although last
time i asked for said map, i was greeted with the reply "Whats that?,
try looking in that big pile of maps over there".

Having done many miles on the same byways doing "horses arses"
(carrage driving) as I (used to?) drive I can say that horses
with carts don't do all that much damage, no more than an LR
with sensible tyres and an appropriately use right foot. The
real problem is going to be cyclists going down hills with the
back wheel locked, assuming that they can get through of course,
now that there's no one to keep the undergrowth back....

I have to say that, having been out with a couple of groups
who were of the V8, heavy right foot and Grizzly Claw tyres
persuasion, I'm not over surprised the ban has come in - I've
seen a 100 year old surface in Derbyshire on a lane that we used
regularly removed by one idiot in a Range Rover in 5 mins,
simply because he could not drive properly.

Tyre choice is an odd one though, I used to use relatively mild ATs
(TracEdges) on the defender with the idea that I wouldn't damage the
ground as much, but I found that it was me who was ripping the ground
up, not the grizzly claw types as I was the one spinning wheels.  The
off-roaders I know aren't the heavy-right-foot brigade though, so my
current thinking is that agressive tyres stop the wheels spinning, as
long as you don't drive like a nut, and it's when the wheels spin that
the most damage gets done.

Having said that, I'm probably going to stop short of getting
Anacondas for my new truck, and probably just stick with Technic
Trackers as on my Defender.  They're muds but not as agressive as the
Anacondas.
