As the friction plate of my RR '81 needs to be replaced a question:
I've no equipment to take the engine out. So I thought to do it from the
inside of the car. Take out the gear cover plate , loosen both propshafts
,take out the bolts of the bell housing, support the engine ,loosen also the
mounting bolts on the chassis. After supporting also the gearbox, move it
backwards away from the engine ,and renew the clutch.
Anyone done this before ? Or is there not enough space to move the gearbox
far enough backwards? Maybe other problems pop up?

Thks

Kees,
oudere RR's.

alles is vlot bereikbaar.

Groeten, Pros
België

Just got an answer from someone in Belgium who thinks the gearbox can only
be removed from underneath the car. So he's also not sure if the clutch can
be renewed as described by me. Maybe someone else knows?

I rather doubt you can on a Range Rover.  You can on a series or 90/110 by
removing the seat box and floor panels, and the gearbox tunnel piece.  Even
then, I ended up splitting the gearbox and T-box removing them in 2 stages,
although it was a ZF auto and therefore not standard.

Renewing the dry clutch on a Defender fitted with a ZF auto? That's a novel
experience you had there Austin ;-)

well, you know me - if it's not something different, I'm not interested.
Actually, it was a clutch failure - A clutch in the box.
