Well another weekend under our our belt.

For those who went Off roading Nige and Andy sorry it was such a let down, I
was well miffed.

Apart from the manky weather it was othewise a good do!

Saturday nights Social has to be the highlight of the weekend, though I'm
considering that any future weekends may lean more towards "Stuff  to do"
than Off roading.

Nice to meet New Faces! Alan Hughes made it over in his 101 GS from the
Emerald Isle and Will Tasso made probably the longest trek from the
outskirts of London.

Kids enjoyed themselves and the dogs are knackered!

Though I'm now leaning more towards a 110 CSW than I am towards the 101 so
if anyone has a nice 110 CSW 300 Tdi and a yen for a 101 Camper then give me
a shout, 4 plus two dogs in the 101 is not much fun. Failing that Morph may
soon be gracing Enay with his presence, it will be a reluctant sale as I
know I'll never get another like him but I'm just not using him as intended
since we bought the Caravan.

Many thanks for organising the trip Lee, I would like to have got more
involved with the 'social' but as we were staying off-site it was always
going to be tricky. Shame about the off-road site but their website is very
misleading. Nice to meet you and hope to meet up again soon.

Yes, thanks to Lee for the organising and to everyone else for a great craic
on the Saturday night.  Great to meet new faces and catch up with ones we've
seen before.  Lee, you missed nothing at the Electric Mountain.  Bill and I
circled the car park for about 30 minutes without finding a place, and all
the roads in Llanberis were double-parked with tourists, so we called it a
day and set off home.

Long trip, bum weather, but worth the ride.  Here's to the next one.

We went that way back funny enough, Didn't stop mind... just that "Dorris"
(Our sat nav!) sent us that way and I was beyond argument with a PDA :-)
Took us longer but saved us sitting in roadworks on the A55? coast road by
the tunnels.

The scenary through the Llanberis pass was fantastic, then like wise along
through to Bala etc etc... tough I don't think the convoy behind though much
of the back end of the caravan 40 - 50 mph tops. Morph pulled well but I
need to check the brakes again as they developed a squeel under braking.
Once cooled it went away.

Would like to pop back and do the Electric mountain, perhaphs half term
weekends are a no no though did look Busy when we went through.

Yes - add vote to thanks - well done Lee.

Aye - a long trip each way - we clocked well over 500 miles in the 110.

Weather wasn't so bad really - for North Wales in October.  The bothy
certainly helped, providing enough protection to remain civilised.

Didn't attempt the o/r.  Once we'd landed in Caernarfon (on a mission) the
castle proved to be a splendid attraction/distraction for the wee ones.

Route home over the Llanberis pass provided spectacular views and not a
few "look at that" squeals from the back.

Good to catch up with some and put faces to others - all the fun and not a
single rivet counter in sight - once again, thanks Lee.

Apols I didn't make the off-roading, ruddy ACE warning light appeared
on the trek to N.Wales Frida.  Spent the morning at Conwy Land Rover
and it transpires that a valve is sticking in the ACE valve block.
Just my luck that the valves are not serviceable and the unit costs
near £300 plus fitting :(

Hey, I was just happy to get some 'machete' action mate!!!

Andy's missis asked him if i always carried a machete in my car - of course i do!

My ear is royally f.cked though, took a good old dose of antibiotics the minute i got home.

Gonna get some serious mud tyres though, not happy with the trac edges at all.

Tell you geezers what though, the only car that could make it up a VERY tricky wet grass slope was Andys
D3 with it's trick electronics etc! I should have let the tyres down !

True enough, the purists among you may not like the D3 but the slope in
question was VERY slippery and yet the D3 handled it well and the Traction
Control, locking diffs etc did their stuff, plus the MT's helped a lot!
Niges 110 got nowhere nor did Lee's 101 although with MT's and locking rear
diffs they would have got further.

It was a nigthmare slope really, not too steep, but mega camber & proper horrible wet grass & mud you
just cant deal with in a road going Land Rover. Unless, of course, it's a new D3. I felt like i was
watching top gear! it was horrible weather though, rain, fog & a serious bad course. The blokes running
the place didnt have a clue when it came to off rouding - they just said to 'stick to the tank tracks'
etc!! How the f.ck can you do that with a Land Rover?

Was good fun though, I'm game for owt & i realised it's my vehicle that lets me down!!! Bring on the
D3!!!!

kiddin, i love the 110

The weight of the thing wouldn't have helped, a new Defender also has
brake-based traction control IIRC, which is supposed to be pretty
good.

Can't beat 6 wheels and 3 diff locks though :-P

Nige was on trac edges, I used to drive them, utter shite on damp
grass.  Might as well have been running on slicks.  It was an incident
on damp grass that prompted me to dump my trac edges, trucks on mud
terrains were driving across it like it wasn't there and leaving
hardly any marks, my truck on trac edges slithered everywhere and tore
the grass up, pissing all over my "I'm not buying damaging mud tyres"
eco-w.nking.

Trac edges are shite, I have no idea where they got their reputation
from.  Probably good amongst AT tyres.

ISTR that the traction control is fitted to current Defenders too, I'd
read that a Defender with the system can sometimes get further through
mud on road tyres than an older Defender on more beefy tyres.  I've
also heard that the modern traction control systems can be better than
diff locks too.  D3 still lacks what you need though, new Defender
would be better ;-)

A decent diff locker would have sorted it, although the tyres where very hard work. I blame myself
though, not enough talent!

i am serious about the tank that was stuck though, how the f.ck can a LR get past a stuck tank in a

Seriously, sounds more like the tyres, sometimes putting the brakes on
a bit can help but grassy slopes aren't exactly extreme off-roading,
getting up one is entirely down to traction versus weight, diff locks
or traction control, a light machine and grippy tyres do it, pretty
much nothing else about the vehicle matters.

Enormous can opener?

I get the feeling that the off-roading site was closed due to being
waterlogged, or was it just blocked by the tank?

It had never been open to normal Landies mate, the slope was extreme for road going vehicles, not many
could have got up it by any way.

Short of a trialler, you where not getting up that hill, ask Lee. the D3 did it through the leccy bits &

I understand they're good on stony stuff.  They're also reckoned to last a
long time, whereas MTs don't last if used on the road.

Mind you, I wasn't that impressed with BFG ATs either, as road tyres.  too
hard a compound for my taste on wet tarmac, perhaps I drive like a nutter

I've got stuck in fairly shallow mud on trac-edges, they clog with mud
very quickly and don't self-clean very well.

They're OK on the road, last a long time and I never had the back end

There's nowt to beat it on a sunny sunday afternoon, in a convoy of about
20-odd bikes... or even just a few.  Best convoy run I recall was leading a
group of about 40 out of Swansea and over the Black Mountain to Llandovery

well, up to a point, it's on a date to suit.  School holiday time probably
preferable, I see that round here at least we have spring HT from 12th to
16th Feb, and term finishes for easter on Friday 30th March, summer term
starts 16th April.

ideally, we'll want a list of "avoid" dates, if people have any.

Hmmmmm. Maybe time to stick my head over the parapet ;)

Later is better than earlyany date before May is likely to cause too
much damage to the ground.

Beyond that we'd better pray it doesn't rain after of last weekends
tales of i derring do and inability to drive on wet grass ;)

With luck I'll have the hybrid minibus built by then.

'course, there's another half term in the "summer" term: 28th May to 1st
June, it says on my bit of paper.

really depends on the weather, I guess - if we have a dry spring then
presumably the ground will be OK at Easter, if not, it'll still be soft.

anyway, plenty of time to think about that.

I thought the plan was to tow the caravan with morph and then leave
the kids in the morph wing and keep the caravan civilised? :)

We like to think we are prepared and ready to go - even so it took around
4 hours circling SW london before we managed to achieve escape velocity
and slingshot our way to North Wales.

FWIW: Final decision to attend was made/conformied @ 10:30 Friday am.  The
trick (for me) is to work like a slave Mon-Thur and then switch off the
email/phone/post channels overnight Thursday.

If you know of any one on looking for a camper with "History" then point
them in my direction.

I will no doubt be titivating him prior to placing him in the back of one of
the rags but if someone wants a little work to finish him then I could
reflect that in the price. Though given the work that's already gone in to
him he's no longer a project so won't be a "project" price.

Little work at the mo prior to camping means;
Plumb in gas to cooker and hob & add vents as appropriate
Add pipes for sink drain - provided
Plumb in water pump for sink - provided
Finish internal paintwork
Complete internal decor
Add curtains
Book camping pitch

He's currently set up as a 2 berth sleeping but will transport 4/6 depending
on how the seats are configured 4 seatbelted or 2 seatbelted and 4 side
facing. Could easily be made in to a 4 Berth though with existing space and
a little time / fabrication.

Yeah, I'll be sad to see him go but I'm just not using him and It's criminal
that he's just sat there when someone else could be having heaps of fun in
him.

I'll be happy with just occasional use on mine. I only use the 2A
properly for perhaps one weekend/month now (and its usually tip runs!)
but that justifys it enough for me as i enjoy it when im driving it!.

wouldnt percy be higher in the list to go than morph?

As would the Laguna and the Tractor however modern life has it's price. I
have a camper and a caravan, thats just greedy. The arrival of another pup
has also made 101 cruising a little more less appealing on the long haul
with 4 occupants and 2 dogs, one large one medium sized.

The IIa is tax exempt and a non runner at the mo, I'd not get anywhere near
the value of what I've put in to the IIa as he sits.

Morph on the other hand is an appreciating vehicle, so a good investment for
someone else. Much as I'd like to keep him I have other plans for the
drivespace. Rebuilding Percy is still on my list of things to do, While I'm
tinkering with Morph I'm not going to get Percy done.

you dont want to buy a 101. Nobody could enjoy burbling about in that
horrible sounding v8.
And why would you want to buy one that had already had all the hard
camper conversion work done on it?

Wanting to join the elite group of 101 owners is silly..

did i do that right? :)
