Despite the improvement to Kato's 200TDi lump after replacing a dodgy
injector he was still smoking like Lily Savage until warm. So today I pulled
off the head and replaced the valve guide seals, I should have taken photos
! the reason for him dropping a valve stem cap on number 3 seems to be a
very heavily coated valve right up the stem , I don't think I've ever seen
one with quite as much carbon concretion (btw thats always been in petrol
engines) the number 2 pot had a quite a bit on  1 and 4 were just the usual
light coating all  the cylinders/combustion chambers were pretty clean so
hopefully thats sorted -  torque wrench session tomorrow.

If the valve is heavily coated right up the stem does the valve guide itself
need replacing?

Hopefully not, there was no lateral play and a healthy vacuum when I loaded
the stem with oil for refitting after cleaning the seals were past the sell
by having hardened  a bit  got me fingers crossed.

Watches with interest. Snowy (the 110) does similar on start up, in fact as
I sit watching the exhaust pipe it misses then you see the plume of unburnt
fuel... Once warm (20 seconds) all is fine.

I had it as a valve guide and valve issue meself. Will take a peek in the
spring unless my hand gets forced first.

Yep cheers, old ones are on the shelf, apparently nowt wrong with them.

I'll bet a a hot meal on it being the valves needing a grind and worn stem
seals allowing oil to dribble down while sat parked.
