That's dire - my 200Tdi 110 has consistently done 25 to 30 mpg
(depending on which way the winds blowing) over 270,000 miles,
and being driven "enthusiastically".
In fact it's not much better the a 2¼ petrol Series III, and
not a million miles off a V8!!
The article doesn't mention whether the dual mass flywheel is
used - I hope not, they are so bad in Transits that Valeo
offer a "traditional" one as a replacement. Plus the starter
motors are providing large incomes for the aftermarket shops.
I have a nasty feeling that Defender is going to become a
joke..... what are Ford playing at!

Well, despite Land Rover's best efforts they managed to retain a
decent reputation so I doubt Ford will be able to do what Land Rover
couldn't!

LR did - spectacularly, though the 80's. They've taken the best
part of 15 years to get their name back (in the traditional home
markets - the overseas markets are probably gone forever).
Sadly, one of our customers has been unable to get a new Td5
90 (of the desired spec.) and has bought an L200 instead, such
is his experience with his Transits.

What exactly was it that stopped later Defenders being legal in the USA?

Crash-worthiness, or whatever you call it. Plus Not Inveneted 'Ere
I suspect :-0
Roll-over protection was the big issue. Despite Series/Defender
drivers surviving remarkably well in a roll, the abscence of
a huge roll bar *obviously* meant they were no good. Such are
those who enact legislation. I reckon the bloke who rolled
his Welsh Water (or whatever they are called) 110 all the way
down a mountain side and walked away with some minor cuts
might have a different view.

It has to be a big issue in the US rollover accidents I mean.We listen to a
down home radio station of an evening here in the UK which is the evening
drive home time over there and almost every night there is at least one
rollover and thats mainly on the interstate their motorway class road.

You too eh! Drive Time used to be a really good end to the day. I
cound just about stomach Steve Wright, but Vine & Mr. Purile (aka
The Ginger Tosser) have caused the radio to consigned to the stores
in favour of intenet radio and CD's.

Yes I was disgusted when that mong got the Drive Time instead of Big Stu on
the bright side Stuart seems to be settling in well with Mark ( Radcliffe )
on that new 8-10pm slot a couple of lads you would be happy sharing a round
with I reckon . Just read his first book last week ,he's got the same
records in his collection aside from the northern soul stuff as me .
