hi.
I'm hoping that some kindly soul can help me with my infuriating
problem with my P38 diesel. I have an intermittent problem where the
engine vibrates quite badly at or around idle speed. This is when the
vehicle is stationary too so it has nothing to do with transmission.
I'm not sure that it might even be a misfire?
Please help someone!!!

I don't know how yours works but is it possible to crack off each injector
with a rag over them to identify which one makes it vibrate more the least?
I.e. which one may be fecked.

Yeah you can do, it's just got regular injectors but it just doesnt
seem like an injector playing up. its more "harmonic" if that makes
any sense. The vibration is at tickover rpm and then again at about
900rpm. I havent revved the nuts off it too see if the vibration
occurs further up the rev range or not as it was past little ones bed
time and the garage is outside her window. I've had a search on the
groups and suchlike and a strange thing i've read is that the viscous
doobrey on the fan wobbles like buggery causing the vibration. There
is a little ibt of play in it mind but not much. Likely or not??

Pull it off. That way you'll know for sure. Probably easier said than done
and no doubt require roof and rear axle removal if it's owt like half the
simple jobs I start.

yep. good plan. what i'll do tomorrow is to try get it to do it again
tomorrow and then whip the fan off and see if it still does it. I
fixed the blend motor the other day and had a perfect vehicle for at
least 24hours! f.cking thing. Shame its such a nice vehicle otherwise
i'd have no problem getting rid of it.
I'm going to attack things in following order
1.) fan/viscous bit
2.) new engine mountings
3.) scary engine related stuff
any other ideas greatfully recieved as per usual!!!

Have you checked the rubber of the engine mounts? Mate had one that
did this, actually I can't remember now if it was an engine or gearbox
mount.

I was going to suggest that, and even go so far as to suggest checking
that the blasted thing is bolted in, on one of my cars I undid the
mounts and re-attached them but didn't use threadlock, and less than
two days later the bolts on two of them had vibrated *out* (three per
mount) and the engine was rearing up under load and knocking on the
engine cover! That was on a smooth-running petrol too.
