Now that I'm cruising around in the new toy the 110 has been parked up for
longer periods. Since I've had it it's had issues with holding it's charge.
The battery is new a few months back (last one was too small and similar
issues), Alternator is kicking out fine so I finally got off my butt and
checked the drain.

With an ammeter I checked and the following drains were found on the
battery.

Radio 100mA
Clock 6 mA
Summat else yet untraced 1mA from a brown wire which runs from the battery
in to the engine bay and disappears in to a harness. Everything seems to
work with it disconnected . I'm assuming it's to the alternator????

Is this right for a radio to pull so much current when in standby (i.e.
memory retention only). Surely if an analogue clock can run on 6ma then the
radio is taking the piss a bit, It's getting right on my tits!

How long is it sat idle for?  I give all of my cars a one-hour run
once a week and that's been enough to keep the batteries in good
condition and keep the gremlins away.

It does seem a little OTT if all it's doing is keeping some memory
powered to store settings, that should be in the microamps range I'd
have thought, not a tenth of an amp, even at 12 volts.  Those FM
transmitters for things like ipod connection only take 30mA at full
chat.

thats cock.

Mine draws 10mA when in standby - Its a Sony one.

Are you sure your one is going to sleep with the ignition off?

Ive mentioned this before, but i got one the other month for the same
reason. They are well easy to use, and will test up to 20a. My heated
screen draws 16A per side when its on :)

The brown wire from the alternator goes up to the light on the dash, so
i cannot see why it would take a visit to the battery box.

Has it got proper terminals on it, or the crimp type? Did Nige install
anything extra?

I got a solar panel trickle charger from Maplin the other day - On offer
for 9.99, and just plugs into the cig socket. Seems to work ok so far.

If thats the one I think it is I got one the other week to keep the
generator battery topped up. It would do 50% better job of that if it
didn't have a blue LED winking away at 50% duty cycle...

Yeah I got one too. It's on it all the time - Its run at least once a week.
The radio is headed for the bin. The clock is disconnected, I only look at
it when I'm late.. if I'm late theres no point looking anyway! :-)

As for the brown wire it has a proper circular connector to the bolt...
looks like it's factory fit as it goes to part of the harness with three
connectors, but only one is connected to this brown mystery wire.

Battery is not on charge because it's snowing! :-)

I used a multimeter and pulled all the fuses to identify each offending
item. Then I disconnected the radio and clock which leaves only the spooky
brown wire.

I swapped the radio for one with a cd just after I got it so maybe the
answer is as I suspect - shite radio/cd.
