Nige - 04 Feb 2008 20:31 GMT Bloody hell, how cheap can you get these now?
I expected around £20k, I have just missed out on one for £13k, a 2004 with 59k on it.
Seems the money crunch is biting, I'll put a few nice cash offers in soon, see what I get in the way of bites.......

Regardless, the V8 L322 RR's are getting pretty cheap now. Fabulous vehicle for that sort of money. Go for it Nige when you see the right one!

I get anything from 280-300 around town and maybe 350+ on a long run if Im lucky.
Trip says 16.4 at the moment after 3months without reset.
EMB - 06 Feb 2008 10:02 GMT > Trip says 16.4 at the moment after 3months without reset. Ouch! I'll stop complaining about the 20.1 from the HSV (VXR8 in UK speak).
Neil Brownlee - 06 Feb 2008 10:06 GMT My 4.2 SC V8 in the RR is returning an average of 17 ..... and it *does* get some stick ;-) Downside seems to be its willingness to drink more than £100 a chuck now :(
Can easily get over 400 miles out of tank on a run, and about 350 round town, and have managed 500 on a nice run up to Scotland :)

Funnyily enough that was a car I checked out yesterday as a possible replacement for the skip, ere, rangy, but that showed an average figures of 18.4 on the vauxhall website so I thought it wasnt actually any better.
I suppose Ill have to drop back to a car, although a V10 Toe-rag is appealing, I think there at least 24.x mpg
EMB - 06 Feb 2008 11:00 GMT >>> Trip says 16.4 at the moment after 3months without reset. >> [quoted text clipped - 7 lines] > I suppose Ill have to drop back to a car, although a V10 Toe-rag is > appealing, I think there at least 24.x mpg The 20.1 is a real world figure over 4 months. Used daily in the city commuting in traffic, open road trips some weekends and the occasional hard out thrash just because it's fun. 27 is realistic on a trip on NZ roads (slower than UK but a LOT more hills) so should be easily attainable in the UK. The only non-standard things about the car are a different exhaust and an ECU re-mapping to give 360kW :-). One of my colleagues with an identical but standard car gets the same sort of economy. My only real gripe is it's appetite for rear tyres - 10000 miles from a set of P-Zeros has hurt my wallet a wee bit.

My only real gripe is it's appetite for rear tyres - 10000 > miles from a set of P-Zeros has hurt my wallet a wee bit. You could also consider a Chrysler 300c..... I've a 5.7 Hemi V8 Touring, it returns average of 19mpg local with lots of cold starts, 27+ on a long run. peretty amazing figures for a 5.7ltr engine pulling 2 ton, but it does have a natty system called MDS which deactivates 4 of the 8 cylinders when under light load conditions. Don't ask me how it works (it's complex and woul;d entail a lengthy post in its own right) but I can tell you this - you cannot detect it operating it's that good! Tyre life from the Pirelli P7's? Who knows. Upside is they are available for £104 each. Comfort, amazing road presence, all the toys and an engine note to die for!! Badger.

> Footballers car.. Might as well get a RR Sport.. Or Toerag/Cayenne/Rangie etc etc - all driven by footballers. What isn't these days, except for normal boring small cars?
> Do you really like um? Personal thing I guess.. Not my scenen man! Fair comment. It appeals to me because there is nothing else on the road that looks like it, it has a sort of uniqueness. I defy anyone to find a vehicle at the same age with the same performance comfort space and toys at the same price - it simply can't be done. An estate car that does 0-60 in under 7 seconds (manuf. claims 6.8, most people that have tried easily achieve 6.2ish, it appears Chrysler were very conservative with their published figures!), can cruise in quiet comfort all day long easily giving over 26mpg (beat that with a rangie, on both counts!), will hit the limiter at 155mph on the autobahn (not that I intend to test that!!) and it doesn't have to go to the $tealer to set up door unlocking preferences, auto headlights, lights-off delay when exiting etc - it's all user selectable. The 5.7 Hemi models are available at around 1 year old with low mileage (mine had 5500 on the clock) for c. £22k - you'd need to let an overpriced (but admittedly slightly better quality of interior furnishings) equivalent BMW reach 4 years old at least for that dosh and then it has no warranty. If I had to criticise it at all, it'd be the lack of a heated front screen option and the lack of aux. inputs to the Nav head unit to allow connection of peripherals. I've already said about the trim quality not quite matching BMW etc, but it does have a fairly opulent atmosphere to it. Not much else to criticise really. Oh, maybe except for this - don't buy one if you are the shy retiring type as everyone wants to talk to you asking what is it etc. I loved my Disco II 4.0 - it never let me down at all, but as I no longer need to tow a big caravan I decided it was time to change. The 300c is quieter, smoother, faster, comfier, more economical, roomier, and has much much better lighting etc - it just won't go off-road but then I have my 110 for that...... lol. Badger.

Actually, mine's called Herman..... Herman the Sherman! Now, I suppose if you dropped your Scorpion out of the back of a transport aircraft at 30,000 feet altitude it might do 0-60 quickly, but not sub-7 seconds. And it certainly wouldn't reach 155mph - that is much higher than terminal velocity. It would, however, win on mpg if the engine was off..... lol. By the way, I didn't realise the Scorpion had electric memory seating...... based on the potential number of squaddies using it, how many memory positions are there? ;-) Badger.

It might make you change your mind. IMHO they feel like a barge, even after the Disco ... without the off-road ability! They're also less comfy than the side seats of a swb S3 going fast (hah) over rough ground.
> The car has a presence. Personally I think they look like shite. Blinged up shite, admittedly, but still shite however you look at then. To me they have the presence of a Reliant Robin, just something to laugh at.

IMHO they feel like a barge, even > after the Disco ... without the off-road ability! Well, having owned both (which personally I feel gives me the right to comment) the 300c is no more barge-like than a disco or rangie and can probably corner quicker due to its lower c of g. I can't say I've noticed any excessive body roll, but then I don't push it hard in corners. If I wanted to do that I'd buy a Lotus Elise!! But lets face it, you wouldn't buy a 300c to go off road in the first place, would you? That'd be like buying a mini to do long-distance touring!
> They're also less > comfy than the side seats of a swb S3 going fast (hah) over rough > ground. What a load of bollocks! Have you got a weird shaped body that likes to be in wooden church pews or something? How can you say that a leather armchair is less comfy than a vaguely padded soapbox??
> > The car has a presence. > > Personally I think they look like shite. Blinged up shite, admittedly, > but still shite however you look at then. To me they have the presence > of a Reliant Robin, just something to laugh at. In the same way that I feel a Series landy is shite then - uncomfy, slow, poor brakes, what suspension, in fact a bloody hazard on todays roads. But then that is the beauty of this place - we are all entitled to an opinion. Each to his own though. It's a helluva lot of car for the money, is comfy, has more road presence than a footballer's rangie sport (park each in a car park and see what one gets the attention), is more economical than any rangie or disco (like for like, so don't bother telling me a disiesel disco is more economical than a 5.7 Hemi petrol) and has superior performance too.

Neil Brownlee - 07 Feb 2008 16:49 GMT We only get the shite spec ones in the uk. Awful cheaply built things - there's one down the road here and the only reason people look at it is because it has an illegal number plate (unfortunate too .... unless the guy really is gay). Chrysler have bought all the crap that Daewoo ditched ....
I can guarantee that in a car park mine woul dget more interest than something that tries to look like a cut price hacked up bentley... but then in this cuntry people will buy a shite spec car and bling it up to look like a top spec one ... sad sad sad. Especially the obvious blinged 2003 L322 diesel near me which even has the f.cking supercharged logo on it as well as the front end and rear lights..... sad f.cker.

Badger - 07 Feb 2008 17:52 GMT > We only get the shite spec ones in the uk. Wrong, we get almost the same spec as our 'Merkin cousins. Base model spec doesn't have SatNav and the stereo is a touch basic. The only things mine doesn't have that's an option is the 20" SRT wheels (I prefer the 18's as there is more sidewall flex and hence a smoother ride) and the rear DVD system.
> Awful cheaply built things - Well, the UK/Europe spec cars are ALL built at Magna-Steyr in Austria and from what I've seen so far the build quality is better than any Landrover I've had in the workshop, with maybe the exception of the Freelander 2 as I've never really crawled over one in any detail. Certainly better than D1, DII, D3, P38.
> there's one down the road here and the only reason people look at it is > because it has an illegal number plate (unfortunate too .... unless the guy > really is gay). Chrysler have bought all the crap that Daewoo ditched .... No, Chrysler entered into a joint deal with Mitsubishi Motors to produce common platforms/engines, but it's sort of fallen through a bit. The Dodge Avenger is one such vehicle and the interior trim quality is utter shite, but then Dodge seems to be like that in General. The equivalent Chrysler variant of the same vehicle platform is the Sebring and it's an awful lot better build quality-wise.
> I can guarantee that in a car park mine woul dget more interest than > something that tries to look like a cut price hacked up bentley... Only for those that try to make theirs look like Bentley's though, with the "B" motif replacing the Chrysler badge and the mesh-style Bentley lookalike front grilles! It's actually based on the floorpan design of an "E" class merc, a pretty good starting point, and all the underside steelwork is galvanised as well. It has a unique "love it or hate it" style, it's one helluva car for the money.
> but then > in this cuntry people will buy a shite spec car and bling it up to look like > a top spec one ... sad sad sad. Neil Brownlee - 07 Feb 2008 18:29 GMT Maybe it's round here then .. only ever see the diseasel el-cheapo ones. As an aside, as my mate works for Daimler-Chrysler, the crossfire is also built on a merc design .. but can anyone guess what ;-) No prizes 'cos it is rather easy ;)
Heh and the Dodge Viper .. what a car - pity it would never work in the UK - what with us having corners and stuff ;-)
As far as the L322 goes (IMHO) .. it is the best screwed together LR to date. Very solid, and oddly easy to work on at the same time - BMW obviously had some input there ;-)

P.S. Never seen the V8 Hemi 300 for sale here tho .... is it a special order?
Er..and I have actually driven some - and also seen them in a stripped down state (Chryslers that is...). Of course my FAVOURITE vehicle we have seen at the training centre had to be the Merc Actross (the tourer....and yes I do mean the tractor unit!) - which the wife wants as a "runaround" !!!!
Badger - 07 Feb 2008 19:02 GMT > Maybe it's round here then .. only ever see the diseasel el-cheapo ones. Yep, the base CRD doesn't have the satnav etc.

> P.S. Never seen the V8 Hemi 300 for sale here tho .... is it a special > order? Nope, UK spec model. Now dropped due to it being a slow seller though, along with the 3.5 V6 petrol version. Still some ex- DCUK cars around to be had though. Your current new choice is 3.0 CRD or 6.1 SRT-8, in both saloon and touring, their logic being that if you are determined enough to go for a V8 then you'll most likely go for the balls-out version! SRT-8 doesn't have the MDS system that makes the 5.7 Hemi so economical though......

It would not put me off one as my cars aren't all about comfy a to b or I'd drive a nissan micra. That would be sad. My Granny was probably one of the best £800 I ever spent, looked like it was a Pimps sunday car but as long as I felt good driving it nowt else really matters.

I could probably run a V8 too as we don't do that much mileage in the family car, but I'd prefer to spend the money saved on baguettes and bottles of red!
I'm holding out for D3 prices to come down to my level - probably still got a couple of years wait for the diesel tho. :-(
