He was put up because he's the highest profile Tory in the country who isn't in the shadow cabinet.
The last thing a philandering MP with a really good second job as a journalist and the editor of one of the two major political journals in the country needs is a proper job where he's got to be at his desk 'nine to five, Monday to Friday'.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Barbeques on fire by the chalets past the castle headland I watched the gift shops glitter in the darkness off the Newborough gate All these moments will be lost in time, like icecream on the beach Time for tea.

Just shows you how unpopular Red Ken was if Boris could beat him without wanting to.

Don't really care what anyone else thinks, but he always told it as he saw it, and wasn't afraid to make unpopular decisions.
I always prefer people who are straight and honest - whether I agree with them or not - at least you know where they really stand.

Yeah but the last year saw a few nasty taints to his honesty with contracts going to mates who didn't seem to be doing anything for the money, so perhaps the power has corrupted him!
Personally I don't like the way the congestion charge was done either, and the function creep he put into it, trying to claim it as an environmental tool (which the LEZ is, and justifiably so).
We'll see how "bojo" gets on.. Thankfully from afar ;-)

His view is along the lines of 'politics is a dorty business', but my personal opinion is that he lost his grip on it all - just a little, but enough. I don't (personally) think he ever set out to be dishonest - just a little creeping stupidity that comes, probably to all of us, with age.
>We'll see how "bojo" gets on.. Thankfully from afar ;-) I reckon it'll be good that the clown will now have to manage what is surely destined to be a massive olympic fiasco - costing all of us dearly.
Austin Shackles - 09 May 2008 07:33 GMT >I reckon it'll be good that the clown will now have to manage what is >surely destined to be a massive olympic fiasco - costing all of us >dearly. well... there's always a tendency to think this.
Consider, though, the legacy of things in manchester following the commonwealth games, e.g. the velodrome. Cost a packet to build, but it's been there a while now and lots of use and people go to watch the cycling and so on.
The Olympics will be a fiasco if, for example, things are not built on time. But prior to the event there are always stories about "it's not going to be finished in time" and I think generally it is. So I'll wait and see, meself.

I do keep seeing stories about sporting stadiums and swimming pools being closed *because* of the olympics though, due to councils allocating money to olympic-related activities and being unable to afford maintenance on other sporting facilities as a result. How much of that goes on I don't know, or even how credible the reports are, might just be journos over-egging the pudding to make a story.

I don't think picking a fight with a newspaper helped either, it just made sure that a team of people would be out there trying to find out the bits where he was apparently being a naughty man.
> I reckon it'll be good that the clown will now have to manage what is > surely destined to be a massive olympic fiasco - costing all of us > dearly. I doubt that he'll be heavily involved in managing the olympics, there's a legion of officials doing the donkey work, but he'll surely get the blame for everything that doesn't go perfectly and none of the credit, as would Ken if he'd won. The press isn't prepared to accept anything other than 100% perfection in others while being generally pretty shameful themselves. Still, people do continue to buy the papers so we deserve the resulting mess.

So, clubs aside, decided to revisit a.f.l and see if anything had changed - thankfully not much has :-)

Unfortunately the PTB here seem to think copying his decisions will be a good idea, but they've omitted to notice the complete lack of sensible public transport. I'm hopeful that his (somewhat unexpected) demise will make them pause for thought.

PS - long time no post. It's good to see you back.
Pantelis Giamarellos - 08 May 2008 10:55 GMT Mother Hi,
if it takes the change of a London Mayor to have you back in the newsgroup I wish they get elected twice a day !!!!!
Red Ken most probably was copying the stupid things Greek politicians have implemented here in Athens. The result was to have more smog, more cars in the center of the town, a more heavy traffic related problem and less effective public transportation in the city.
All those #@$s claiming things about CO2 emissions should take a closer look on what airplanes, factories and wood burning stoves in Africa and Asia emit
Take care Pantelis

(Apols to the Bard - but I doubt he ever knew a Greek...)

"we've had a lot of trailer thefts recently", quoth they.
I was tempted to (but refrained) say "If I was going to nick trailers, I'd use a slightly less conspicuous motor"
Currently, Father is driving that. In theory, I've got the 110 wagon but that's awaiting time and/or money to repair the chassis, neither of these things is in good supply right now.
Or a bit more money and time and a complete rebuild. I know a chap who has a good galved chassis.
