Thanks Si for sorting it out.

Wicked time :)

Got home in good time, worked out the MPG at 32.3, which aint bad with a
tyre on the roof all the way home!

Bought myself some BFG MT 255 85's which make the 90 look so much better!

Took a detour round a friends house on the way home - he has just had an op.

320 miles to a tank - and no more.... I ran out outside of his house Doh!

Bec was not pleased.

Thanks to all that were there - yet again another enjoyable memorable
weekend!

Was a top doo!

I've just about got stuff that needs to be unpacked unpacked... fetched the
dogs, just been the loo in the dark... soon as I settled down the floor
tiles started flashing and this dude with an Afro started doing a nightfever
impression!  ;-)

Stunner!

RRIII rocks towing! No sh.t we overtook a Suzuki Bandit onthe way back :-) I
think he was pre-occupied spitting flys :-)

Thanks all especially Si who made it possible.....

PS

I've just checked your link Mark after typing the above... Groovy!

Not surprised - you have yet to make good on your end of the deal <g>

indeed, good to meet up again and even to finally put faces to others.

The young man is well pleased with his 'new' tent and the girls are
completely infatuated with Max.

Proven now without doubt, the sun-glasses/umbrella theory - bought
recovery straps (and associated paraphernalia) and then didn't need them
on the froading course (is this a first?) although the WD40 has become
mandatory.

Noticed when clearing up, half a pan of chilli tatties had 'disappeared' -
hope Max is ok, imagine that grumble may be sporting some new &
interesting odours on the way home.

>Wicked time :)

Indeed - good show all round - and one I wasn't planning on doing -
actually, I'd sort of decided to chuck the whole landie thing into
history - but Simon offered a ticket and being a Yorkshireman (well,
sort of these days) couldn't resist.  Reminded me of the bits about
shows I like - especially Driffield.  I'm not really arsed about the
landies much these days - apart from the odd one or two that old mates
have been working on (Riks 'monster truck' Disco was "interesting").
Meeting old mates - lots of whom seemed to be at Driffield this year
and a few I hadn't seen for over 5 years, putting names to faces (Mark
and Bill especially), and the overall laid-back silliness that goes
hand in hand with those who gather for the enjoyment of like-minded
sillyfolk.

We had - IMO, the best possible location - well away from almost
anyone else, by the stream tucked away in the corner.  This made for
far less passers by asking to same mindnumbingly boring questions -
question to which I've never really got around to inventing suitably
rude answers for (apart from 'why is it purple?' - Wayne Davis gave me
an idea of what I should reply - but have never had the bottle...).

A nice 'family' mix also reduces the potential for laddish behaviour
and is far more welcome than a group of rivet-counting tossers
discussing the correct alignment of their nuts and why their balls are
so shiny...

Charlotte always likes Driffield because of the long walks - away from
people talking bollocks about landies - and also as it generally
knackers Max, not to the point, obviously, where he cannot go nicking
any bit of food left unattended or guarded with an electric fence - he
seems to have put on a little weight in the last couple of days, oddly
and yes Bill, I'll naturally be volunteering him to sleep in a tent at
the next show - any volunteers who think they can out-fart him please
put their hand up...

The perfect escape from the Real World [tm] only slightly marred by
the Capitalist photography company doing the froading pics who wanted
sixty quid (no typo, that is 60) for a CD of some pics.  When Mark
offered the normal 30 they turned it down.  Now I'd sooner have all of
30 quid rather than none of 60 - I can guess how much they must be
making out of froaders if they can turn away 30 quid for a 3p CD -
given they've already taken the pics an all...

So, cheers Simon for revitalising my interest - in the folk not the
motors, and to everyone who didn't mention that Simons Disco seemed a
little lower on the passenger side as we navigated the off road
course.  Large WD40s all round  :-)

hurrah for the boogyman!

'twas a good weekend indeed.  Went to school in the disco which I park
next to my classroom, gave a lunchtime detention to three scrotes who
hadn't handed in their homework.  When they came into my room at
lunchtime i handed them a bowl of hot soapy water and a cloth
each.......
.

and made them clean all the ovens.  Their faces were a picture!

Best of all was the teaching assistant who has recently bought a
diesel P38  "Why do you go offroad?"

Great company, great food, great laughs, great bargaining from Becs!!!

We also got home and found 8 uncooked sausages........

what are the chances of a south-westish unofficial later in the summer, when

We're not doing Eastnor - my last experience there somewhat put me orf

The plan is to try and find a weekend when they haven't got any shows
planned (they do quite a lot of different stuph there over the summer)
and meet some friends who're coming up from Southend.  Billing is
(sort of) equidistant for us both.  Always room for more around the

Nope.  's got different wheels (16" instead of 14") and shortly will have
ProComp ES3000 dampers :-)

The bigger wheels improve the ride and the procomps are cheaper than the LDV
originals and better quality to boot.  They also have the advantage of not
being shagged.

It's a pity.  Shame Malvern show died the death, that had a lot of potential
to be a good event.  Gwan, come to the show and stick 2 fingers up at the
buggers, if you don't go 'cos of the morons, you let them win.  Just looked,
there's no way I'm going to get the 110 legal by the 7th June, got way too
much to do, and people whingeing about how long they've been waiting for
things for which I very carefully gave no delivery date :-)  That is NOT the
way to motivate me...

Personally, my repsonse to rivet-counters and their ilk is along the lines
of "go forth and count yer rivets, then".  There's a lot more stuff to do
than faff about like that, and petty politics unfortunately is everywhere.
There some likelihood that I'll end up being chairman[2] of the harchery
club this year... mind, this will afford some opportunities for putting a
certain person[1] in their place, so tis not all bad.

I still reckon the unofficial club had a lot going for it as an idea.  It'd
be nice to have a multi-landy club with no rules and no rivet-counters. Sort
of an RL AFL, so to speak.  Provided it has a sufficient "official" presence
to get shows to afford it "club" status (how does that work, anyway?)

[1] one of those types who attends meetings, has much to say but to little
purpose and refuses to actually do anything, on the slim excuse that she's
"done her bit in the past".  ISTR she was secretary for a year or three, but
that was some time ago.  Others did their bit and continue to do so...
Unfortunately every club seems to have such people, who also tend to delight
in sniping behind others' backs.

[2] on the grounds that I can't really criticise the current regime too much
unless I'm prepared to have a go meself... might be a laugh, I've never been
a chairman before.

5 years in ... and mud-club is proving that it can work [1], but there are
issues [2]. There is no way you can have *no* rules unless it's a very very
small club of mates, and those mates never ever disagree.

yeah, you have to have some rules.  I favour something along the lines of
"if more than 75% of the membership will sign their name to a notice saying
'XXXX is an arsehole' then XXXX gets booted out".

I don't really see you need much more rules than that.  The problems with
most organisations seem to come from getting too bureaucratic.

Problem is, most organisations have the majority of their membership
inactive from what I've seen, e.g. my local MVT has about a hundred
members but only about 6 ever turn up regularly for meetings!

> I don't really see you need much more rules than that.  The problems with

There does need to be some safeguards against people swinging votes by
just encouraging more people to turn up, say for example a scheme was
implemented where it only took 75% of votes to boot someone out, but
regular meet turnouts only came up to 6, it would only take one
faction to muster up a few more people to get the relevant mass to
swing it.

Just read any club's AGM minutes and voting stats, you'll often see
complaints about pathetically small voting participation from mostly
inert members.

Yep.  I wrote, which I'll dig out tomorrow, a bit about the organic
development of a 'club'.  My reckoning is that the biggest challenge
is nothing to do with the club or special interest - but how to manage
the growth and avoid the personality and petty political disputes.
Tis them that kill clubs, quicker and dirtier than anything else.

Too much 'member participation' is as bad as too little.

My experience,  in a slightly different field,  is that you get recognised
when you buy tickets in bulk for a discount.

What the level of purchase is varies depending on the event,  but usually
it's somewhere around sixty.

Some organisations have a formal affiliation system (you have to write in to
find out about it) but it works out about the same.

If you buy enough tickets you get your name in the programme and allocated
somewhere to camp together that's actually on the map at the entrance and
the possibility of a stall to sell yourself to new members at a discounted
price.

If you're reasonably glib you can get most of the benefits without actually
selling the tickets,  once...

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.
Barbeques on fire by the chalets past the castle headland
I watched the gift shops glitter in the darkness off the Newborough gate
All these moments will be lost in time,  like icecream on the beach
Time for tea.

Oh how things have changed since the early days of Nominet ;-)

In my experience, landie shows _want_ clubs there more than clubs want
to be there.  You say "we're a club" they then bung you some tickets.

>and whether there's any advantage in so doing.

I like to think that if you're given tickets for a show, you should
both turn up, and display something that may be of vague interest.
The obvious downside is that you are a bit tied to your stand /
display, however in reality, so long as there's a couple of folk
around, more for security than anything else, it'll usually be fine.

For the shows I've organised in the past, I've tried to make it
'interesting and welcoming', for various values of interesting and
welcoming!  :-)

It was the cleanest and best orgainsed that I can recall for some
years.

It's not about winning or loss really, more about my own (selfish I
guess) sense of overall enjoyment - which will be clouded by memories
and also bumping into some folk who I just don't trust - or like very
much.  I don't do 'polite' for the sake of it if I don't mean it,
believing it's best to be direct, sometimes blunt - which can often be
misinterpreted as being hostile.

I also don't like 'shows' per se as much as I did, seen too many
landies to last a lifetime.  I'm far more interested in the social
side and getting to meet old and new chums and yes, p'raps talk
bollocks about landies a little, but not to the point where I take any
of it too seriously :-)

That's what I go for as well, and I get few opportunities, one way and
another.  We've had a few good times sitting around with your field cinema
and a few beers and a barbie.

OK, so forget the official "shows", I suspect they're about to self-destruct
anyway as they've got too many and each is losing moolah 'cos there are only
so many show-goers.

Back to what I mentioned earlier - an Unofficial somewhere not a million
miles from this end of the country, later in the summer, back end of August
maybe, now there's no Malvern show.

I reckon I might swing camping at BiL Tim's place, but I don't think he
wants to host off-roading.  Any good pay-an-plays in the hereford/worcester
area?  I'm sure we can find other stuff to keep us occupied apart from that.

I find myself more and more surprised about how much I can talk about
101s when at a show, but for us a major reason for attending them is a
weekend away from the usual grind, meeting with old friends, making new
ones and giving the monsters a chance to hurtle around and have some
independence away from the young scrotes at home.
