No, don't think so.  When I first approached Jumbo a couple of years back
that's what he said (thinking of insurance and liability issues, I would
think), but when I said we were all mature, sensible guys* he relented and
offered us a field to camp in and full use of the site - and it is a
cracker.  I have trialled there many times, and it ranges from moderately
shiny-friendly tracks to hardcore class 5 ballbreakers and everything in
between.  DAve R knows the site well, too.  We could have the use of a field
to camp in, but no facilities.  He'd probably provide a portaloo at cost,
I'd guess.

It's probably too far for most folk, though.  West Wales is a long way from
anywhere, and Wood Park is a bastard to find even when you know the area :-)
Martyn would take a month getting there via Aberystwyth.

* Then I said "like me" and he changed his mind again :-)

depends how it's done.  PORC used to have an "instructor" in each group.
Mostly, said instructor would jsut point out the most impressive mudholes.
They did do a bit more when it came to the "steep downhill" slope for
beginners - stopped at the top of the slope and a quick check that you knew
what you were doing and were in a sensible gear and weren't going to try
standing on brake and clutch.

I was there once in the auto 110.  "Don't touch the clutch" said he. "I'd
have a job, it's an auto" :-)

on another occasion, we were following the "instructor" in a G3 rangie P38,
he motored off across a decidedly iffy-looking bit of terrain.  "Sod that" I
thought, "that looks like a swamp", and drove around on the track.  Sure
enough, he proceded to get seriously stuck, much to everyone else's
amusement (and, to be fair, his) and had to be towed out.

shame that site has gone.  500-odd acres of varied terrain, with a couple of
play areas with carved out holes and lumps to play on/in

ultra adventure sounds good though.

I was down at Internal fire, I note the end-of-season crank-up is October
the 12th.  It's well worth going there on the crank-up days, you get
visiting engines and anything on-site that will run gets run, even things
that are not officially running, if they'll start...

The other thing I want to go to there sometime there is the night-time thing
they do sometimes.

Crystal Ball time.....

Police in South Wales were today following up reports of a Firepit seen
hurtling down the Brecon Beacons, Dia Jones said, "I were roundin up me
sheep after them dammed SAS squaddies spooked them. I looked up and saw a
Firepit in full blaze coasting down the mountainside on castor wheels, it
was unreal". A Police spokesperson said "No sheep were worried during the
incident, if anyone witnessed the incident we are keen to hear from them".
Representivives from the Civil nuclear authority played down claims that the
unidentified flying fire pit was Nuclear powered. Taff Davies said, "We can
neither confirm nor deny the presence or increase in nuclear material on the
mountains following this incident... in fact theres that much up there
anyway it would be hard to tell, but off the record we will deny any
knowledge...doh!". Nearby camper Austin Shackles commented, "It's amazing
what some fresh countryside oxygen can do to the mind.... and I understand
it's pretty efficient at getting firepits alight"

I'm provisionally booked sometime then.  I fancy Pembroke, but then it's a
long way for everyone.  Although that camping pub place we went to in 2006
was good, and didn't mind us having conflagrations.

The weekend I was thinking of is in October - Internal Fire's end-of-season
crank-up is on the Sunday, which is worth a look if you've not done it
before.

Austin - how close are you to Internal Fire? I have some old Dorman and
Ruston manuals that I might donate to them some day. The AFL courier
service with you as the end point might be a way of getting them there.

You wouldn't have one for a Dorman in a 22RB or one for an air cooled Ruston
twin cylinder, 23hp at 1850rpm, it's approximately 1500cc?

Gotta work Friday, although I can get to a venue friday evening.

So which off-road place do we like the sound of?  That ultra-adventure
sounds good, especially their berwyn mountain venue (if that's what it was
called), several hundred acres to play in.  Bit of a long drag down this way
from there, mind, to IF.  I came across reference to another one near
Carmarthen, which wasn't K-quads.

Just looked again and found a link to their website, which says they're
closed.  Bummer.

Spose we could go to K-quads again, partly it depends on who's coming and
whether they've done it before, also whether K-quads have changed anything.

Of course we need a date, but its more important to be able to say "10
vehicles" - when can we do it ? I reckon.

Well, if it's within reach of Internal Fire, I still fancy that weekend with
IF as a Sunday outing.

There was a bit of discussion with Steve when he called here as to whether,
instead of a pay and play (which seem to be a bit thin on the ground) we
could instead do a day's laning somewhere midwales-ish.

dunno if that's a go-er.  Did you reckon you might have a contact, Steve?

If I get time and tuits I might take a run down to K-quads - they may have
improved/changed it in which case it might be worth a return visit, or
perhaps combine it with a bit of a corsscountry drive somewhere.  There's
always Sarn Helen in the beacons area, if some bugger hasn't closed it.  As
it was, K-quads is really only half a day, but that and a bit of laning
would be good.  Depending on numbers and caravan-quota, we might have room
here for the overnight dossing aspect, and there's a couple of good pubs in
the area for sunday lunch.

hmmm.  Starting to sound a bit like a plan.

Yes, I'll send him a note - but he's up Rhyader way.

Thinking on, I could put together a good scenic bit of mountain driving
without going off the tarmac around the beacons and so on.  Sarn Helen is
only marked as a BOAT down the bottom end these days, I suspect.  I guess we
ought to be law-abiding...

Not sure of the status of the track from Ffair-Rhos over to the Elan Valley.
That used to be a nice run.

Where's Simon Isaacs when you want 'im? :-)

Not sure that there isn't a lookup thing on the glass site.

We're up for anything, anywhere, anytime ... which doesn't mean we can
... ;)

It just means that as we have a couple of things already booked,
Archery tournament and a couple of weekends in the caravan we might not
be able to attend, whatever the date.

So if someone goes ahead and books/sorts out somewhere, sometime,
something that's definite we'll only be able to answer yay or nay then
... ;)
