We haven't had a ROT thread for a while, so here's one.
When the muppet (sorry, highly-trained engineer) came to fit my cable
TV he decided that the ideal cable to connect the box to the modem
that was 6 feet away would be to use a 300 foot cable. The excess is
coiled up behind the sofa.
So I want to shorten it. But if I rip the end off 'for a look' my
internet will go off and all sorts of bad things will happen to my
genitals when Mandy gets home from holiday.
Has anybody done this? Please tell me I don't have to ring Statler
and Waldorf in the call centre...

Go down to Maplins and get some screw-on F-Type connectors to fit
CT-100 or RG6 cable (which should be the cable you have, it's about
7mm diameter). Get the cable the right length (allow some slack, you
may want to move the PC etc 5 or 6 foot, remember.
Cut the outer PVC sheath off, about 1cm from the end. pull the braided
screen back over the sheath, so that it is peeled back onto the cable.
Cut off the inner plastic layer to give the singe copper core sticking
out. Then simply screw the connector onto the braid/sheath. Trim the
copper core level with the end of the connector. Re-connect the cable.

So it's just co-ax? Cool - I can manage that. I'll buy some cable at
the same time and make my own to length. The one to the TV is a bit
on the short side as it happens....

Yup. I'm not sure wether Maplins still sell CT100, but they do list
CT125. The difference will mean you have to get the right screw-on
connectors for the cable, they come in different sizes. Just make sure
that you get 75ohm cable for TV application, not 50ohm.

the best thing to have is a few cable connectors and a fitting tool
