Buzzing Catalytic converter on Rangie

Hello All:

Directly following a head gasket failure and the dumping of all of the
water from the cooling system,the accompanying Catalytic convertor on that
side of the Exhaust system (V8) began buzzing and clanking like a bucket
full of pebbles. Turns peoples heads it does :-(

The CAT still works fine, it's just got loose insides.

Apparently to replace it you need to buy a complete pair of left and right
down-pipes (with Cats) at an horrendous cost.

Tried a few whacks with a rubber mallet to see if the loose/buzzing part
would "JAM" in place, but no joy.

Any suggestions as to a "fix" for this noisy-nuisance problem?

Danny,

If you car is pre 92 (J-reg or older) you can remove the cat
and replace with a standard box.

I took my old disco to a specialist exhaust place (not Kwik-Fit!)
and they made a box up to fit where my cat went, but the exhaust
and did a proper job, no need to replace the down pipes. They also
did their own cat, which was loads cheaper than factory.

I also took mine to an exhaust specialist and they just replaced the duff
cat and all was once again quiet and sorted.

Thanks to Matt & Barno for their suggestions.

Unfortunately, my Rangie is a 99(T) 4.6 HSE and the downpipes cats etc
are a single 2-branch unit culminating in a single output pipe.

Any suggestions as to a "specialist" exhaust supllier/fitting outfit
that would cut out the offending cat and replace?

As I run on LPG the CAT is a bit academic anyway :-)
