2002 GS300 111K. Check Engine light just lit up while I was on the freeway. I checked the gas cap and it was secure. Next morning I drove home about 50 miles and the car ran fine with the light on. What might be the cause of this? I am going to call my local Toyota/Lexus mechanic to see how much a diagnostic will cost. What is a fair price to expect? At this stage, I wouldn't pay anything to find out what the "check engine light" means, since some places offer a free check. I had the light come on and I went to a chain auto supply store that offers a free check. It turned out to be a minor matter that they could correct. The first thing to do is to disconnect the negative battery terminal for about one to five minutes, then reconnect it. That should turn off the "check engine" light.
