i have experienced what i felt was premature tire wear on my lexus
rx400h.  after 17,600 miles the
goodyear eagles on the vehicle were worn out with excessive wear on
the inside edges of the tires.

the lexus dealer's service manager said that this was due to two
factors:
1) the softness of the goodyear eagles, as they are subject to wearing
out very fast
2) the geometry of the suspension and the electric hybrid motors cause
the
tires to wear out at the inside edges

does anyone have similar experiences?

if i wanted longer wear, i should go with a harder tire like a
michelin, but i would still experience
the tires wearing out on the inside edges?

any comments

thanks

It could be the tire pressure is to low.  I had a similar problem with my
Toyota 4Runner.  I replaced the original tires with Michelins but did not
increase the tire pressure to the recommended pressure.  I think the
pressure was what Toyota recommended.  I wore those tires out.  I replaced
the tires again but now they are inflated to Michelin's recommendation for
the tires (35PSI).  The tires seem to be wearing better.  I only have around
10K on them but I don't see any unusual wear on the tires.

You can get longer tire wear if you increase the tire pressure by 4 to 5 PSI
over the pressure recommended by Lexus.

hi all

thanks for the comments,.

i did take the vehicle into the dealer and they adjusted the alignment
and the camber on one side was a little off, but all 4 tires wore on
the inside edges.

according to the information on the inside of the door, they recommend
the pressure be set at 30psi
the dealer suggested 34 psi.  the dealer and the tire store said i
should go with michelin,
they have a hardness rating of 400, while goodyear eagles rating is
280.

the dealer told me due to the hybrid electric motors and the
suspension geometry
the tires will wear on the inside edges faster, and the tires won't
wear evenly no matter
what i do, i rotate them every 5000 miles

i can accept the fact that goodyear eagles wear faster than michelins,
but for this
suspension to wear the tires unevenly doesn't seem right.

i called lexus and expressed my dissatisfaction with the uneven tire
wear.
it will be kind of interesting to see what their response is to this
question.

i did replace the tires with michelin

Perhaps the Lexus engineers should have figured the electric motors would
cause a tire problem. Obvious;y the camber was incorrect....
