Lexus 2008 GS 460 ranked last again?

johngdole@hotmail.com - 27 May 2008 03:46 GMT 8 speed tranny is good marketing, but I guess the 100 ms shifts make it a clunker: "The tranny doesn't keep up, endlessly hunting for that ideal gear (remember, there are eight of them) and delivering lethargic shifts when in manual mode."
"With the votes in, though, the Lexus is akin to bringing sake to a cabernet competition. Sure, it's technically wine, but it doesn't really match up, lacking the requisite flavor, color, and vivacity to stir the judges."
Too bad the GS 460 came in last in this review group. I guess being the cheapest of the group, GS does help those who can't afford better and who don't push cars to the limit:

mcbrue - 28 May 2008 00:06 GMT WHAT !!!!!!??????? You mean that the 460 which has an 8 speed is not perfect ? Just wait till Glga comes in to spew or whatever he does after getting a skin full of whatever it is he drinks. This 460 is quite predictible. The 430 with its 6 speed is realllllllly inferior to the old S Klass German kar that I traded on it. Der old cherman kar had a 5 speed but was smooth as butter when shifting. The Lexus bumps and thumps and when driving along at a constant speed will actually jerk and bang into a lower gear! Kind of like driving an old Chevy or something.
johngdole@hotmail.com - 28 May 2008 06:03 GMT Today's performance transmission design is towards dual-clutch Direct Shift Gearboxes (DSG). The advanced Borg Warner designs can upshift in as little as 8 ms (!!!) instead of the 100 ms in the Toyota 8-speed. But again, I don't think anybody ever claimed Toyota had a performance transmission, but they do doll up their cars nicely.
I agree ZF Friedrichshafen has some really great transmissions and produce variants of the dual-clutch design as well as the LePelletier design. And the Getrag manuals are the gold standard (some Honda Civic manuals do come close).
Don't mind the little jerks. They probably don't have their parents' permission to post anyway.

What do you drive, john?
mcbrue - 28 May 2008 23:59 GMT What do you drive, DaveW?
Just for the record, I drive an 06430Ultra. The 07s were due out shortly when I bot the 06, but I knew they would have a new tranny and I had the fun with the ES units allready - white ball crumbling, etc, etc. So I decided to stick with the proven product, the 6 speed. Oh well ... another mistake!
DaveW - 29 May 2008 00:59 GMT >What do you drive, DaveW? As I've posted here before, I have an '04 GS430. I'm very happy with it, as I was with my '02 GS300, '01 IS300, '96 SC400 and '93 SC300. Aside from the three CD players the IS went through in three years (replaced under warranty each time), they've all been trouble free. I've put somewhere around 180,000 miles on the five cars over a 12 year period (the IS was new, the others were bought Certified Pre-Owned) without any serious problems, so I continue to buy them.

Oh >well ... another mistake! I understand you've had your share of problems with your LS and your ES, and that explains your occasional crotchety posts here, but I believe Lexus makes very dependable cars and your experience is the exception rather than the rule. No manufacturer is perfect, but surveys and studies consistently show Lexus to be among the best in owner satisfaction and long-term reliability.
I've asked john a number of times what he drives because I'm curious about his motivation for his constant negative posts here. Anything at all he can find that shows Lexus in a negative light has him racing right over here to post it. There's some kind of personal bitterness there, and I just wonder where it comes from.
GIga - 30 May 2008 02:30 GMT My guess is that his father abused him as a child.
But seriously folks!
Some people are "mis-matchers". Simply put, this means that they ALWAYS find the dark cloud in every silver lining. Long Dong clearly has the need to "prove" something, and he derives some sort of perverted joy in finding meaningless articles about how crappy Lexus is and how their sales are tanking, blah blah blah. The whole 100mS thing is fascinating to me, as I happen to own one of those 8 gear CVTs, and have absolutely no trouble smoking Porches off the road (much to their surprise). I've had my LS600 up to 135mph on the highway (yeah, I know, dangerous, illegal, dumb, whatever), and it was purring like a kitten, with no hint of a shift all the way up, and all the way down. It's like those idiots who claim that they hear the difference between varieties of speakers with similar ratings and rolloffs. They can't -- they just want to show everyone how smart they are, and how inferior everyone else is to them. Thus you have Long Dong and McBrew-jerk -- the two loudest mis-matchers on the board (although, I fear there are more than just these two). I'm guessing that Dongle does not drive a Lexus, and is probably somewhere in the vicinity of 12 years old (if not physically, at least mentally), and I'm pretty sure his mommy would be very angry if she knew that little Johnnie was posting nasties on the internet.
BTW Dave -- I have similar statistics on the 9 or 10 Lexi I've owned since 1990. They simply do not break, and the routine maintenance (while more expensive than Yugo's) is done professionally, and flawlessly. But then again, I'm clearly a Lexus employee, so I'm biased. Right Brewski?

You probably should ensure that the Porsche pilots are aware that you're trying to race with them next time!

GIga - 31 May 2008 03:51 GMT Actually, he tailgated me onto the highway, changed two lanes to the left, and nailed it. After I blew past him (yeah, I know that was childish of me), I slowed down, and he pulled up next to me and gave me a "surprised" look.
You're probably right -- he was clearly just out for a Sunday drive. How silly of me, Mr. Anon-e-mouse.

W. Wells - 31 May 2008 15:02 GMT If you want to see Porsches get smoked just watch the Grand Am GT series races sometimes. Pontiacs and Mazdas do it all the time.
