The ECU knows just how much fuel is being metered into the engine, and
how far the car has driven. Probably the biggest inaccuracy would be
from tire diameter changing with wear or inflation.

My friend's 2005 Avalon's trip meter indicates the exact mpg to the
tenth, however my GS300 2006 trip mileage meter is off by exactly 1.5
mpg, consistently too high, I might add. It is no sweat, as the miles
left is always conservative and I have never gone below tw gallons
left in the tank, I always chicken out...... (sigh)
It is incongruous that Toyota's software is better than its Lexus
counterpart, unless of course the fuel metering sensor is totally off,
but then why the consistency in its calculations.
