Tire cupping

Does anyone else have problems with the ES330 causing tires to cup?? I have
a 2005
model year, and have now ruined the 2nd set of tires with a cupping
problem.. Vehicle
has about 60,000 miles, and has been aligned about 4 times. Never really out
of spec.

Anyone?

If you had to align the car so often in 60K miles and they drifted off
spec no matter how little, then I would suspect loose suspension
components. For instance, if ball joints, struts/mounts and rubber
bushings are worn, then those need to be replaced. If tires aren't
properly balanced then it could cause cupping as well. You wouldn't
happen to have Bridgestones tires on there do you?

If you started having problems while things were still covered under
the comprehensive warranty, then obviously the dealer didn't fix
things right.

Everytime the alignment was checked, it was always in Spec. The garage
wanted
to check it, as the tires were not wearing evenly, and starting to cup.
But nothing was ever found wrong or out of spec.

How often do you rotate the tires?

Tires were generally rotated every 5 or 10,000 miles.

Unfortunately, front wheel drive vehicles are more prone to unusual tire
wear patterns than rear wheel drive vehicles, and some brands and tire
models are more prone to wear problems then others.

"Cupping" is generally caused by worn or damaged parts, especially worn
struts or shock absorbers,  which is not likely on a 3 year old car with
only 60,000 miles.  Do you get any vibration or fluttering in the steering
wheel?

When you say the tires are "cupped," do you mean that they have a scalloped
appearance across the entire width of the tire tread or just on the outer or
inner edges?

If just on the outer tread, try increasing tire pressure by 5 PSI cold.

Ray,

The car steers perfectly with no vibration or fluttering...

The scallops appears across the entire tire. I did increase the pressure by
3 or 4 lbs, believe 35, and tires now seem to be wearing out in the center,
which I guess is to be expected. Believe I will have to replace the tires
within
the next couple of months. It is the 17" tires, so not too many choices. Did
come
with Michelin and I replaced with Goodyear.
Not sure what to try next..

Scallops appearing across the entire tread width usually indicates worn
shocks or struts or an over-inflated tire, although I doubt if 35 PSI is
enough to cause cupping.  With worn struts or shocks, the wheel and tire
bounce more, and as the wheel rebounds back to the pavement, some rubber is
scrubbed off.

Look at the struts for signs of fluid leaking, and do the old-fashioned
bounce test.  If the struts are bad, you would probably experience a
wallowing sensation on rough road surfaces.  I doubt if bad struts are the
cause, but it never hurts to eliminate all possibilities.

After that, I'm out of ideas without looking at the car.  Have you tried the
Lexus dealer or a Toyota dealer?

If the alignment is in check and the tires are rotated 5-10K miles,
then worn struts or other suspension components should be found and
fixed. These include control arm bushings, struts and mounts, ball
joints and strut rods (rear). It's too bad these aren't covered under
warranty now.

Your mechanic should be able to quickly check for looseness by pushing
on the wheel while on the rack. etc

Thanks for the info..

Will check it out next time in garage..

Thanks
