Does anyone know if Lexus will do the update to cars past the warranty
period for free?  There should be 2 free upgrades.  Does it need to be
the original owner?

Where did you hear that there should be 2 free upgrades?  I asked Lexus
(via their web site) and was told that they do not give any free
updates.

FYI, the dealer where I bought the update wanted another $90 (beyond the
price of the updated DVD) to pop the DVD into the player.

Because it was an evolving technology, the '98 GS/LS with nav got
three free updates to the HD database within the 4yr/50,000 mile
warranty and the '99 got two.  No more free updates starting with the
'00.

Thanks.  That is a reasonable explanation about the update policy.

I still don't understand why a dealer would want to charge $90 to pop a
DVD into the navigation unit.

I've got an 04 LS430 and last spring I asked about an update and the dealer
did it for free siting a defect on the original DVD that Lexus is covering.
For those that have the 04 LS430, ask about it.
