Hi all,
I've not been able to use my Lexus LS400 for about three weeks duration
twice in the last two months, each time the battery has went 'completely'
flat.
The battery's only a year old,is this a common problem?

I'm not sure how the alternator would affect a car that's not holding the
battery charge when it's not actually moving,I know what you mean tho',it
might not be getting a good enough charge when it is being used ...
I wonder how long a battery would normally hold it's charge?
I'd completed a 500 mile run before I parked it up last time.

An alternator with bad rectifier diode (shorted) will cause the problem
you're experiencing. So like the other porter recommended, check the
alternator. This bad diode problem can also be intermittent.
The battery could also be defective. If it has ever been run completely
down (as it sounds like it has) then there is an extremely high
probability the battery has some internal damage. The more times this has
occurred (running all the way down) the greater chance of damage. Even
once can do it. Lead-Acid batteries are not built to be run completely
down and you -will- damage one if you do.

Check for a something like a stuck trunk light switch, courtesy light
switch.
If its nothing obvious like that - pull out each fuse in turn and stick a
milliamp meter across the contacts (make sure that the doors/trunk etc. are
closed. You're looking for any circuit that takes more than a few milliamps
with the car shut down.

This is Turtle.
Hey , just go to any Auto Zone parts house and go inside and ask them to tell
you what is wrong with your car. They don't have a computor to put on it but
they have a battery / voltage regulator / altinator combo checker and they will
tell you for NOTHING and see which one is giving you the problem with the
battery going dead.
OOOPPPPSSeeYYY , Your Addy was the UK.
Get a Mechanic to check the voltage out put on the altinator and if your putting
out 14+ volts D.C. you battery or a short is causing the problem. if it's not
putting 14+ Volt D.C. it's the Altinator and just replace it with a new one from
Lexus for about $600.00 U.S. or get a Toyota Maxima altinator at $268.00 U.S.
and put on it. The Toyota Maxima is the same altinator in every detail. Also
your Lexus OEM Altinator that comes on it has a manufactor tag on it that says
Toyota Brand Altinator on it.
But let your Mechnaic do most of your thinking here and this is just your guide
lines to follow or know what is going on. i have a 1990 Lexus LS-400 and had the
altinator replaced with a Toyota Maxima Altinator about 1 year ago. The Alinator
usely will wear out in about 160k+ miles.
